NEW YORK - New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg offered a full-throated defense of his proposed ban on large-size sugary sodas on Friday, calling criticism of the proposal "ridiculous" and saying his city is again leading the way in taking on critical health issues.
Coca-Cola, the world's largest soft-drink maker, assailed the proposal in a statement on Thursday.
"New Yorkers expect and deserve better than this,' the Coca-Cola statement said. "They can make their own choices about beverages they purchase."
Meanwhile, New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, a Democrat, told The New York Post on Thursday that he was considering state legislation to thwart the measure.
"We may be getting too close to Big Brother," Silver told the newspaper. "I just think we ought to step back and look at the freedoms that we have been given in this country and reflect on them."
"You think this was bad?" Bloomberg asked. With the smoking ban, "everybody was opposed to it. today, virtually every major city in America does it ... whole countries!
"If people are yelling and screaming, there's nothing you can do about that. I mean, this is ridiculous."
"Nobody is taking away any of your rights," Bloomberg said later in the broadcast. "This way, we're just telling you That's a lot of soda.'

"Public comment period" is just a sick farce.
The proponent is already rejecting arguments against it...and the Board is expected to approve no matter what.
If Bloomberg keeps stuff like this up, I think NYC is going to crack....and it won’t be pretty.
Unbelievable the gov’t has the balls to tell us what size of drinks we are allowed to consume..pure madness.
He’s gone off the deep end. Next he will be forcing courtesy flushes in private bathrooms.
Hey Bloomberg .... have you noticed that some evil people are selling foot-long hot dogs. A little irresponsible, wouldn’t you say ?
“that’s a lot of soda”
Yes it is, but it’s none of his or government’s business. Individuals have the right to make their own decisions and government should do only what it’s supposed to do.

Don’t give him ideas.
It has less to do with sugar than it does with the nanny state. Whether we consume too much sugar or not is not the province of government period.
Just let it be a huge crack.
I expect him to ban pre-marital relations in addition to homosexual behavior because it is proven that these “choices” spread disease, increase cancer risks and are mentally unhealthy.
It is none of your ****ing business doomberg!

It will be if SCOTUS doesn’t overturn bammycare.
Nanny Bloomberg wears dress in full-page New York Times ad
"Critics of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg will relish opening a copy of Saturdays New York Times.
The paper will feature a full-page color ad of Hizzoner wearing a dress, under the banner The Nanny.
The ad, paid for by the Center for Consumer Freedom, targets Bloomberg for his health-related proposal to ban the sale of sugared soft drinks in servings larger than 16 ounces."
Im glad that Mayor Bloomie recognizes that most New Yorkers arent smart enough to make simple health decisions.
Now if we can somehow get him to keep those folks from voting in federal elections...
Yes...the smoking ban was bad. I still oppose it. It is a violation of property rights. And I’m a non-smoker.
And, now, look at the precedent it set.
Yes, it would cause a little dip in their bottom line, initially, but they're going to take a bigger hit when every other mayor in the country follows Bloomberg's lead knowing there are no consequences.
Some might object that move would be "punishing" the people of NYC, but they're the ones who installed this monster in the first place.
And a lot more dachas.
And a lot more armed guards.
And a lot more Armani suits.
