Israeli researchers find American Indians with Jewish genetic markers

JERUSALEM, May 30 (Xinhua) -- Geneticists at an Israeli hospital said they have found a unique Jewish genetic mutation among an American Indian tribe, indicating that they are descendants of Jews expelled from Spain 600 years ago, local Haaretz daily reported on Wednesday.

The findings of the study, conducted at the Sheba Medical Center near Tel Aviv, show that a group of Indians from the State of Colorado bear the so-called "Ashkenazi mutation," on the BRCA1 gene - a marker unique to European Jews.

While such so-called "secret Jews," or "Anusim" in Hebrew, whose families assimilated into various north and south American cultures hundreds of years ago after journeying to the New World are more and more known, this is the first time an Indian tribe has shown the gene.

Those Jews were believed to be descendants of a Jewish man who left Europe and settled in south America about 600 years ago - likely among the hundreds of thousands of Jews expelled by Spain in 1492, and possibly among those who sailed with Christopher Columbus, according to the report, which appears in the European Journal of Human Genetics.

Let's see if I have this right. 2012 less 600 years is 1412. So that means the Spanish expelled Jews were among some of the first non-indigenous colonists to the new world (post Vikings and post Chinese - of course).

That is kind of interesting. Although a recent family tree show did a special on people of Latin ancestry and found some of the early Spanish Conquistadors were families with recent Jewish ties who had fled the Spanish Inquisition (1478 to 1834).

A lot of Spanish Jews ended up in the New World (since the Old World wasn’t too hospitable for them). Many of the first settlers in Columbia were of Jewish descent; and as many as 25% of the first Spanish settlers in Mexico City (once it got rebuilt) were of Jewish descent.

If you were of Jewish descent (even if you were a practicing Catholic), and Spanish, there were not a lot of places to go; and the New World looked pretty good.

A great many, beginning with Columbus' first voyage, sailing delayed by a day due to a jammed harbor caused by the expulsion. However mostly South America and the Carribean. A total stray aside, the first Jewish immigrants are usually dated to 1654 in New Amsterdam. Fleeing Brazil. I guess that's enough time to father a tribe, but imo not likely.

Interesting topic. Crazy title, which I guess is what sells books, but Jewish Pirates of the Caribbean, a couple years old, is a pretty interesting history of post Inquisition Jewish trade routes in the Mediterrean and Carribean/South America. A little bit about pirates too.

All nonsense. The Jews expelled from Spain were Sephardim, the Ashkenasi lived in Russia and Eastern Europe.
