Legislative Democrats aren't organizing a bake sale just yet, but they say they will desperately search for cash in the coming weeks to avoid the most severe cuts proposed by Gov. Jerry Brown.
Saying the state's budget deficit has risen from $9.2 billion to $15.7 billion, the Democratic governor has proposed more cuts to programs that serve the state's poorest residents.
Brown has described it as a "day of reckoning" and wants his fellow Democrats to slash as much as possible before he asks voters to hike taxes on sales and high-income earners in November.
But Democrats signaled immediately that they plan to block some of the deepest cuts to welfare, child care and college scholarships for low-income students.
"We will scour the cupboards, look behind the pots and underneath the cushions, doing everything we can do to see if there's some opportunity to reduce the extent to which we have to make these cuts," said Assemblyman Roger Dickinson, D-Sacramento.
Democratic lawmakers say they have cut enough in the wake of the recession and that Brown's proposals would result in homelessness, even death.

Democratic lawmakers say they have cut enoughObviously, they haven't.
Mostly, when the tax paying folks leave, you lose tax revenue, Mostly.
This is what happens when you’ve got a budget that depends on the rich:
*Just 1 percent of California taxpayers are already providing 45 percent of the state’s income tax revenue, such income taxes now fund half the budget.
*The number of upper-income earners in California has shrunk by a third between 2007 and 2009. Wealthy Californians are fleeing to nearby no-income-tax states
And drive out businesses:
*The tax burden for a company to operate a business in California is 13 to 14 percent higher than the rest of the country
*In 2011, more businesses (254) quit California than the year before (202), which was a high-water mark over 2009 (51). Last year, roughly five businesses left in any given week, one more than left in each week of 2010 when the average was 3.9.
And turn a blind eye to unfettered illegal immigration from the Third World:
*California houses an estimated 25% of all of the countrys illegal immigrants. The tax paid by one legal citizen is equivalent to the taxes paid by nearly ten illegal immigrants in any given industry.
*According to a Fox News report dated January 19, 2011, immigration watch dog groups have estimated the total cost to Californias economy to be as high as $21.8 billion which would represent 87% of the propose d2011-2012 budget shortfall.
Michael Reagan couldnt have said it better:
“In less than 50 years they ruined my home state.”
Bon
Does Planned Parenthood get any state funds? Where’s this hidden.
And as long as the Democrats, Unions, and illegals occupy and control this State it will never recover.
LOL! The commie 'RATS really need to lighten up. What a bunch of dorks! When have the commie 'RATS ever been concerned about the death of a member of the unwashed masses? Hypocrites. The only "death" they're worried about is the death of the commie 'RAT party.
Not to worry. They will just cut all those unnecessary services like police, fire and public education. Works every time.
For every small business of 100 people that gives up and leaves the state....it’s a true significant loss that cannot be made up. That’s business-related taxes, property taxes, and the income taxes of the 100 people, layered on top of the small business itself.
So you figure that a hundred such businesses easily leave each year as a minimum. Toss in a few larger businesses, and small store fronts that just give up. At the end of the day...you just can’t make up for the losses.
Where is the bullet train to nowhere budgeted? Jerry has to have his shiney little train -
Wow, it was just a few days ago they were insisting that California would soon be awash in money from the Facebook IPO. They really have no clue.
Any corporation still remaining in the state needs its shareholders to start questioning its board of directors. Just remaining in CA is looking more and more like a violation of their fiduciary responsibilities. Like remaining in a foreign country where the government is now nationalizing similar industries.
California was blessed with two incredible industries...movies and silicon. It took them 4 decades to piss away that wealth. Any other state would’ve gone belly up in half the time.
Look at Jerry’s plan, I didn’t see any cuts to the many environmental regulatory agencies the state has.
Nissan relocating from LA County, CA to Williamson County, TN was a major nail. You would think it would be a wake up call.
And don't expect people to wise up and vote them out either. Detroit has been Democratic for at least 40 years, and continues to spiral down into third world poverty. Yet the leadership continues to be elected and lives large at the citizen's expense. Such an arrangement pretty much defines third world politics, where a wealthy ruling class is disconnected from the people, but connected to the wealthy somewhere else.
The only thing protected from cuts is the system of boards and commissions that pay unemployed political hacks six-figure incomes while they are unemployed.
Pardon my abruptness, but politicians always hype losing police and fire first. Scare tactics that should not exist if the government education system was worth a crap in the first place.
If those a******S ran their personal finances the way they run the State's, balking would not be an option!
If the funds aren't there to spend, you can't spend it.
Granted, fantasyland has different rules, but you can't ignore math and reality forever.
It is what it is.
