SANFORD, Fla. —
WFTV has learned charges against George Zimmerman could be getting more serious.
State prosecutors said Zimmerman, a neighborhood watchman, profiled and stalked 17-year-old Trayvon Martin before killing him, so the FBI is now looking into charging him with a hate crime.
Zimmerman admitted to killing Martin in February during a confrontation. However, he claims the shooting was in self-defense. He's facing a second-degree murder charge, which carries a maximum possible sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
In the meantime, FBI investigators are actively questioning witnesses in the retreat at the Twin Lakes neighborhood, seeking evidence for a possible federal hate crime charge.
Martin was unarmed when he was shot to death, police said, and some accuse Zimmerman of targeting the teenager solely because of the color of his skin.
WFTV legal analyst Bill Sheaffer said federal prosecutors would have to prove the hate crime to charge Zimmerman, though.

Assuming, as I do, that he shot Martin in self-defense, this is ridiculous. Is the goal to take away the right of self-defense?

Oh, thanks for that brilliant analsis, sir. I never knew the burden of proof was on the prosecution before.
By the way, I don’t think you do have to prove anything to convict on a hate charge, actually. I don’t happen to think it’s possible to prove motive, which is one of the reasons why motive was never an element of crime before the Thought Police decided white people, and apparently hispanic-white people, deserved extra special punishment, and non-white people, but not hispanic people who are also white, are a protected class.
One could smell this coming a mile away. The charge will probably be consecutive rather than concurrent. The government can inflict the maximum damage on Zimmerman by filing consecutively and can achieve the sending a “message” to anyone resisting an assault by a black. Zimmerman is going to be convicted of something and shall probably suffer death while incarcerated.
Even the FBI has been infiltrated and rotted out by communists. Are there any truly American institutions left?
You can betchera$$ the feds are checking internet handles to check if he made any comments or visited ‘racist’ web sites. Only takes one person saying they heard him tell a racist joke and bang - Hate Crime!
If you read on, that's not what Sheaffer said. But, in any case, have the standards for "journalists" sunk so low that they no longer understand even the rudiments of our legal system. The prosecutor doesn't HAVE to PROVE ANYTHING in order to CHARGE a suspect. That's why we have trials. After charging him, the FBI may need to demonstrate it has a reasonable basis for the charge, but that is a long, long way from "proving the hate crime".
But this idiot's undereducated readers will now assume that if Zimmermann is charged then the case has been proved. Idiots!

You’ve got that right.
This doesn’t qualify as double jeopardy for two reasons. It is a different charge that what is he is on trial for in Florida AND Florida is a separate sovereignty from the Federal government, thus he can be tried twice.
It sucks - but it is the way the law works. To see a real example of this, remember the cops that beat up Rodney King - they were tried by CA and found not guilty, then Federal hate crime charges were used to get a conviction.
It won’t be long before we all will be arrested for “hate crimes.”
The next step is to make it a major hate crime to dislike liberals and progressives, along with Democrats. That will become a hate crime associated with felonious thought crimes.
It’s coming people. It’s a tide that won’t turn because we have lost the war against political correctness.
