Motown needed male groups, and one such group was dropped into the lap of
Holland, Dozier and Holland in 1964. Levi Stubbs had a magnificent set of pipes. Who could forget him as the voice of Audrey II in The Little Shop of Horrors? This song from the musical isnt H-D-H, but it really shows off Stubbs chops.
Levi Stubbs & Rick Moranis: Feed Me, Seymour
H-D-H came up with a wonderful song that barely missed the Top10. It has a great opening that just grabs your attention. I love the way they ratchet up the tension at 2:07 and the way they release it.
The Four Tops: Baby I Need Your Loving

The year 1965 was a banner year for
Holland, Dozier and Holland. The Supremes provided most of the cash for Gordy and the guys. This song ended up being iconic with its easy movement from A minor to C Major.
The Supremes: Stop! In the Name of Love
Then the guys milked the same idea but almost made it sound fresh.
The Supremes: Back in My Arms Again
This time, the repetitive nature of what the guys were doing caused this song to miss the Top 10. There were probably sleepless nights at Hitsville USA as the guys were hurting the labels top act.
The Supremes: Nothing but Heartaches
Then the guys changed pace and tried something different for the girls, and it paid off. Watch how they use key changes (modulations) to ratchet up the tension.
The Supremes: I Hear a Symphony
