Everyone thought he would wait until after the election. After all, same-sex marriage is still a wedge issue in most of the country. With just over half of Americans now supporting gay marriage, and with many religious conservatives already distrustful of the president, most did not think his administration would rock the boat on such a volatile issue.
But yesterday President Obama rocked it anyway, telling ABC News: "I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are...
So, what are we to make of this sudden turn of events? Over the last few years President Obama has said that his views on same-sex marriage were "evolving" along with the rest of the country's. But why has he chosen this moment to offer an all-out endorsement? Here are three things to consider:
1. Obama had already lost the religious vote. Over the last year the administration has made a number of decisions that have alienated religious voters, most notably the matter of non-church religious institutions having to cover contraception in employee health care plans. The decision upset the Catholic Church in particular, and an endorsement of same-sex marriage is only going to anger a block of voters already unlikely to vote for Obama. In other words, he's got little to lose politically.

The question is: will Republicans and religious conservatives take the bait? Will they stay on message and hammer away on the weak, even non-existent economic recovery--an issue on which President Obama is genuinely vulnerable? Or will they swerve into a cultural crusade that might fire up their base but ultimately turn off the moderate swing voters necessary to win in November?I'm not optimistic. There's a reason they call them The Stupid Party.
Obama Endorses Same Sex Marriage—Now What?
Now we give him an English-Chinese dictionary. He’s going to need it when he reaches the other side. Who says conservatives have no heart?
He can divorce Michelle and marry himself?
He's goin' to Disneyland !
(insert disneyland Gay Day photo here)
 .
Now, government persecution of Christians will pick up steam.

He loses.
He will have to continually pay tribute to his gay base as they will be watching for any sign that he said what he said for money only. That means he can forget any state south of the Ohio river as they are solidly against this. And with the inter-mountain west Mormon territory, he is already toast there as well.
I think 0 is just going to try to win the states Kerry won in 04 + Ohio. What else can he do?
“He can divorce Michelle and marry himself?”
I think Bo is in big trouble. Sanctioning bestiality and pedophilia will be right behind. Remember when our gay friends said that getting rid of the sodomy laws would in no way ever impact marriage being between one man and one woman?
Now he loses.
I dispute the premise of this sentence. I know "polls" show half support something called "marriage" between sodomites...but everytime it is put to a vote it is rejected, or nearly so, right?
Besides, even if everyone agreed, it wouldn't be "marriage".
Obama’s politics of distraction
While Europe is inching ever closer to plunging into a financial abyss, there are moments of comic relief provided by the current President of the United States. He has not only become the butt of innumerable jokes but his re-election campaign tactics are the stuff of low-brow comedy. A case in point, his recent “evolution” in to supporting gay marriage.
