A 64-year-old homeowner says he was forced to empty his .45-caliber handgun while shooting at one of two men who broke into his northwest Detroit home.

I bet she’s probably ok with it
He had a very narrow window of opportunity to take control of the situation, and he had to shoot while his wife was in a headlock and the other perp was menacing him.
Any delay, and the two perps would have been in control.
Too bad the second perp didn't slice open his jugular vein while diving through the glass window.
Needs more time at the range. Still, though messy, he got the job done. Unfortunate one of them escaped.
Not bad for a 64 year old in a high stress situation with a .45 Auto. Those 1911’s are hard to master anyway if that’s what it was.
They would probably both be dead now if he hadn’t acted.
Wife was treated at the local hospital and released. Far better outcome than what the perps had in mind.
My gut tells me that she’ll forgive him.
“Those 1911s are hard to master anyway if thats what it was.”
Smoothest and easiest gun in the world to shoot.
I think the .45 is really hard to shoot, darn thing is too big
The trick to the .45 Auto is to manhandle it and don't be dainty. Use both hands and keep both eyes open and empty the mag on target. It'll get 'er done. Just remember it is not a finesse weapon.
It’s one of the smallest pistols out there, by far the slimmmest.

You beat me to it. I don’t own one but I’ve shot some really nice ones and they are easy, and fun, to shoot. My Gen4 Glock G22 is pretty easy to shoot too and holds 16 rounds.
oh well i am thinking of the .45 I had to practice at the range with in the Army. Impossible to shoot
Maybe as a younger you that pistol seemed so big and powerful. Other than compact pistols like small revolvers and pocket pistols the 1911 is one of the smallest pistols out there, certainly one of the smallest automatics.
Just curious, had you ever shot a handgun before then? When I say it’s easy to shoot I mean compared to my .40s, 357 Magnum, 44 Magnum. It does recoil but it’s very manageable for the size of the cartridge and bullet.
I only weigh 100 pounds.......maybe that had something to do with it
I have shot other handguns since that are way way easier, not a clunky and that you don’t have to wrestle with, but I am not by any means or stretch of the imagination an expert, far from it
I agree, I have the Colt 10mm Delta Elite and the best thing I like about it is I can get my hand around it and control it so well compared to the wider staggered magazine grips like the Beretta and Glock.
The 1911 frame is my favorite of any full size automatics I have ever handled, 101 years and still among the best there is.

I guess it might. I’m 6’ and 250 lbs and have catcher’s mitts for hands.
those range pistols were so worn out you could stand in a barn and not hit a wall. Try one that has been worked on by a good gun smith. The are smooth and bad.
