It sounds like he did the best he could under the circumstances.
He had a very narrow window of opportunity to take control of the situation, and he had to shoot while his wife was in a headlock and the other perp was menacing him.
Any delay, and the two perps would have been in control.
Too bad the second perp didn't slice open his jugular vein while diving through the glass window.

I've read that the best instructors don't teach to shoot at a target from a distance. They teach to shoot at point blank range first which is where most stand your ground situations take place.
