President Obama endorsed same-sex marriage Wednesday, just hours after North Carolina adopted a constitutional amendment to ban it -- one of 41 states where same-sex marriage is illegal.
President Obama's declaration does not change any law, but it does inject a contentious social issue into the race for the White House.
"For me personally it is important for me to affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married," Mr. Obama said.
CBS News correspondent Norah O'Donnell reports Mr. Obama has often said he was in favor of civil unions for gay and lesbian couples and in favor of equal rights, but on marriage, for years he has said his thoughts were evolving.
Advisors admit it was not the president's plan to announce his support for same-sex marriage Wednesday. Ironically, his hand was forced in part by his vice president, and by growing anger among gay and lesbian financial supporters who felt it was time for the president to clarify just where he stands.

Force the questioners to clarify that they really mean "homosexual marriage," then they can point out that it's an oxymoron.
The worst family to live in the White House only because of their obsession to be in every facet of our lives. How about a week without the Obamas—what a refreshing vacation that would be for me.
I thought the very same thing of Obama and girls, who remain unchurched and have not a clue in sight that marriage was ever a commonly held to be a sacramental state, in the USA. Poor things are raised heathens.
What, a 9 year old in the 80's greatest concern coming to pop saying " Daddy, I'm comcerned about stopping nuclear proliferation". Deadpanned ever so sincerely by Carter in some dang debate. I remember. :)
Of course, the Obama girls are not in public schools. I wonder what the Sidwell school teaches about such things......
Heck, the “enlightened” world we are sliding into will probably permit them to marry each other; sisters or not.
It’s pretty low to put the blame for your controversial postitions on a couple of tweeny girls
That's almost certainly BS. His real advisers probably just think it will warm people over and explain away his sudden "change of heart" on the issue.
REV. WARREN: Okay. There’s a lot more I’d like to ask on that, but we got 15 other questions here.
Define marriage.
SEN. OBAMA: I believe that marriage is the union between a man and a woman. (Applause.) Now, for me as a Christian, it’s also a sacred union. You know, God’s in the mix. (Applause.)
REV. WARREN: Would you support a constitutional amendment with that definition?
SEN. OBAMA: No, I would not.
REV. WARREN: Why not?
SEN. OBAMA: (Applause.) Because historically, we have not defined marriage in our Constitution. It’s been a matter of state law that has been our tradition. Now, I mean, let’s break it down. The reason that people think there needs to be a constitutional amendment, some people believe, is because of the concern about same-sex marriage. I am not somebody who promotes same-sex marriage, but I do believe in civil unions. I do believe that we should not — that for gay partners to want to visit each other in a hospital, for the state to say, you know what, that’s all right, I don’t think in any way inhibits my core beliefs about what marriage are.
I think my faith is strong enough and my marriage is strong enough that I can afford those civil rights to others, even if I have a different perspective or a different view. (Applause.)

...and people bought into that..? ROTFLMAO!
Some 'spirit of discernment', folks...
As Nancy Pelosi says, “it’s for the children.”
I figure the “Big Love”/polygamy crowd will be next.
Obama admits to poor parenting
Obama is going to lose on the issue, just like the vote in NC.
You are highly commended for your invaluable contribution to the ‘Obama is a Failed Jimmy Carter’ Presidential Archives for your excellent reference to Amy Carter/Obama kids’ influence on presidential politics.
He looks like what my dad’s generation called a ‘dandy.’
Maybe he didn’t want them at all.
It was Michelle’s idea.
Worse than that. He looks like a degenerate.
