Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind., one of the longest-serving members of the Senate, lost the Republican primary to state Treasurer Richard Mourdock on Tuesday. With 14 percent of the vote counted according to the AP tally, NBC News has called the race for Mourdock, who leads Lugar 61 percent to 39 percent.
Facing a headwind of tea party anger and hamstrung by a lingering story about his out-of-state residency, Lugar's campaign struggled badly in the final weeks of the campaign to make a forceful case for his re-election. Mourdock's bid was boosted by national conservative support from groups like the anti-tax Club For Growth, which ran a series of negative ads against the incumbent.

Sounds like Indiana has a sore loser law that prevents that.
Besides, Lisa M did that on her own, certainly she had support in the state GOP but the NRSC backed Miller.
Indiana is not Alaska where the democrat nominee in 2010 was irrelevant, the democrat would win a 3 way race and no one wants that. Nor are the politics there so provincial as in Alaska. Lugar’s career is over unless Obama or Romney makes him an Ambassador.
What bares watching is whether he’ll be a little b*tch and not endorse Mourdock.
Conservative tea-partier beats GOP-e RINO! Much confusion among elites!
In an extremely long-winded statement Lugar says:
“I want to see a Republican elected President, and I want to see a Republican majority in the Congress. I hope my opponent wins in November to help give my friend Mitch McConnell a majority.”
But goes on to trash him and conservatives with NYTimes talking points.
Democrats are now of course quick to call the GE competitive but I doubt Mourdock will have much trouble with Joe Donnelley. I’d have worried more about Donnelly potentially upsetting the doddering old Lugar if he had won.
39% supported LUGAR, YUCK!!! Still a lot of work to do in the party to remove those 39%
Very good news for conservatives tonight. Also, I will give Lugar credit for saying that he wants Murdock to win to help a Republican Senate majority. If the old school RINO’s don’t get the fact they are in trouble in their primaries they are as dumb as the Democratic base!
I am thrilled that Murdock won! Now, more than ever, we need CONSERVATIVES in the Senate and House. The moderate Republicans just aren’t cutting it.
Whoops, thanks Impy!
Thanks Impy!
I have no idea why you responded to me, especially why you think I am critical of you. I didn’t even post to you at all.
Congratulations, Clintonfatigued, on getting it done. 61%-39% exceeded everyone’s expectations.
I meant this for you, of course.
Whoooooooooo hooooooooooo! FINALLY! I have not voted in that catagory for years now. The RNC would never put up a different candidate! Thank God for the Tea Party!
Good riddance you liberal, socialist , corrupt, arrogant pos!
It thought it could laugh at us calling itself a Republican while being a liberal socialist who betrayed America, and the people and freedom.
Lugar's weakness in the primary would have been amplified ten fold in the general election. Mourdock's ads took care to be personally respectful of Lugar while pointing out that he had lost his Hoosier moorings. The Democrats wouldn't have had to be so deferential. That little thing about not actually living in Indiana for 36 years wasn't going to go away.
Part of my email from Richard Mourdock:
“..Joe Donnelly has been a loyal soldier for Barack Obama. He was a deciding vote on ObamaCare. He voted for Obama’s Stimulus program and his bailouts. Donnelly voted for Obama’s policies so often that the President calls him his “Partner.”
It’s no surprise that Obama’s SuperPACs are gearing up to spend millions for Donnelly.
You can understand why we must Match Donnelly’s $800,000 immediately. It’s incredibly important that we are able to respond to the Obama/Donnelly attack machine.”
So happy Mourdock won this important battle! BUT we can’t forget the next battle - the GENERAL ELECTION:
