Lugar Defeated by Mourdock in Republican Primary

Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind., one of the longest-serving members of the Senate, lost the Republican primary to state Treasurer Richard Mourdock on Tuesday. With 14 percent of the vote counted according to the AP tally, NBC News has called the race for Mourdock, who leads Lugar 61 percent to 39 percent.

Facing a headwind of tea party anger and hamstrung by a lingering story about his out-of-state residency, Lugar's campaign struggled badly in the final weeks of the campaign to make a forceful case for his re-election. Mourdock's bid was boosted by national conservative support from groups like the anti-tax Club For Growth, which ran a series of negative ads against the incumbent.

It will be a miracle if Mitt wins - even against Hussein.

Actually, I'm starting to believe that we could run Felix The Cat and mop the floor with Obama.

His support seems to be "a mile-wide and an inch deep" -- and getting narrower and shallower every day. The voters are proving capable of recognizing an abject failure when they see one.

The entire Democrat "machine" is starting to look like a fish in a barrel.

(Crossing fingers...and toes)

Specter is the ultimate loser. Switch parties and push for Obamacare and he still got primaried by the rats a year later.

Why would Lugar expect any different if he switched parties? He won’t win as an independent either. He already lives in D.C. and can be a lobbyist.

In order to run as an independent he would have to actually move back to Indiana!

Well conservatives had Bachmann, Perry, Cain, Gingrich and Santorum to draw from and couldn’t rally around a single candidate. The conservative vote was ultimately split between Gingrich and Santorum. Since conservatives couldn’t get their act together Romney was able to slide in. Hopefully next time we can get some stronger candidates

Way to go Indiana—you did yourselves proud! Things are beginning to look very good for conservatives on the “US Senate front”. There are other TRUE CONSERVATIVE Tea Party Senate candidates who deserve our support.

Some examples:

In Missouri, Sarah Steelman is up over McCaskill 49% to 42% in the latest poll. She’s a sure winner and a committed conservative. We need her in the Senate ASAP!

In Texas, Ted Cruz is nipping at the heels of Establishment Republican candidate David Dewhurst. We don’t need to have Dewhurst going to the Senate where he would certainly become a CINO/RINO “moderate” in the mode of Richard Lugar. Let’s pull for Ted Cruz!

http://www.tedcruz.org/

In Nebraska, there’s Don Stenberg. He’s been endorsed by Jim DeMint, the Senate Conservatives Club and the Club for Growth (amongst others) over Bruning. Stenberg deserves our support also.

In Wisconsin, Mark Neumann deserves our support over the RINO/CINO Tommie Thompson.

And I’m sure tonight’s results in Indiana are putting the fear of God into Orrin Hatch. Dan Liljenquist has forced Hatch into a “runoff” Republican primary. Just as it was time for Richard Lugar to be retired by Mourdock, so it is now time for Hatch to be retired and replaced with a more reliable and consistent conservative—something Hatch has ceased being.

And, by the way, we need to keep a VERY close eye on Lugar (and the whole lame-duck Senate) this winter. I fear they will try to ratify some nasty sovereignty-surrendering treaties with innocent sounding names.

He may pull a “Specter”: switch parties and run as a Democrat. Or a “Lieberman”: run as an independent.

Can't do it. Indiana has a "sore loser" law.

If you run in the primary...and lose...you cannot file as an independent (or anything else) in the general.

Lugar is finished. The only damage he can do now will be as a sitting Senator for the next eight months.

So, do we think Lugar is going to go cut down his black walnut trees, sell them, and skedattle to points unknown?

He was a double switcher. Prior to 1964, he was a Democrat. He violated my axiom that a politician can only switch parties once in a career with the exception of Winston Churchill, and Specter is no Winston Churchill.

OK, one more time—Indiana has a `sore looser’ law.
I posted it verbatim in the above related thread.
I didn’t write it Lugar-lovers, so don’t yell at me.

On to something completely different:

Emotional GOPee question mark John Boner opined,
“There’s nothing to see here. Actually I find it all boring, but I don’t want to cry so I’m going to put on my orangutan suit and go to the boring Indianapolis zoo.”
