In a surprise turnabout, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has decided to cancel the early elections he had called just 24 hours before and instead form a unity government with the opposition party Kadima, Israeli officials said Tuesday.
The decision shocked much of Israel's political establishment, which was gearing up to dissolve the parliament, or Knesset, and launch campaigns for a Sept. 4 vote.
By joining the government coalition, newly elected Kadima Chairman Shaul Mofaz avoids facing voters amid polls indicating that his centrist party would lose more than half its Knesset seats. Just a month ago, Mofaz declared he would not join the government and vowed to unseat Netanyahu.

Go, Bibi!
I sounds like Kadima Chairman Shaul Mofaz knew his party would lose a lot of seats and power and gave in to Netanyahu to keep from being voted out.
Does this mean Israel is leaning more conservative?
Leni
Other governments are weird. They can suddenly call for and suddenly cancel elections; they can collapse because another party took parliment; it’s all so odd.
Who is a “haredim” and why are they not not integrated into the armed forces?
I wondered, perhaps, if the feces was nearing collision with the rotating oscillating air circulator a bit sooner than we thought.
Could it be that Bibi is moving up the timetable for taking out Iran???
The haredim are the various "ultra conservative" or orthodox Jewish sects. They tend to reject all things secular and try to strictly observe the Torah.
Bibi has a deal.
The bombing begins in five minutes.
Well, soon anyway.
“Get Some!”
And do they not have a tax free status which gets fellow Israeli's undees in a bunch?
“Could it be that Bibi is moving up the timetable for taking out Iran???”
Could be...
My first thought, too...
Well that was an excellent move on BiBi’s part...wow...might be Iran issue is in play moreso than not.
Yep. Mofaz knew he would be booted and he also knows that Iran cannot be allowed to develop nuclear weapons and they are getting too close.
Any Israeli that thinks about 1939 and what followed knows that you can't sit around and hope for the best, you must act.
Voluntarily boarding a train bound for the gas chamber is not acting in your best interests.
When the Jews of Israel say, "Never again", they mean it.
The liberal Jews in America are not really Jews nor Americans, anymore than liberals of any stripe are really American.
The liberals give up on America when they choose communism, and the majority do.
The US has been moving many of our ships into the Gulf and for various reasons for sometime now...we basically have Iran surrounded.....plus Syria defused, or lets say otherwise occupied, claiming now they have an interim gov. organized and ready should Assad be removed in the near future.
Iraq is relatively stable, and Afghanistan is about as stable as it's going to be. Obama moving troops out might have also been relocating them to strategic places as well.
So the stage is fairly set for the best advantage I think. With this Netanyahu has stated, without reservations, that Iran will not be allowed to have the nuclear bomb and has not once moved from that position. So this move was a good move in light of the overall situations in the ME.
Well yes for the most part. Others are that becuase they don't know the difference. The Jewish friends I have are very much union people and always vote accordingly. ..even if they really might not want to. Their job security is the priority, and though aware of Israel their distant from the overall culture.
I'm so glad BiBi did this and Mofaz took the opportunity he was presented with. Whatever the motives for each it was a good move with how things are staged now in the whole of the ME.
However, one must keep their eye on Russia and China, they raise their heads at the most critical moments when it concerns the ME.
