French Socialist Francois Hollande appeared headed to victory over President Nicolas Sarkozy, according to exit polls of voters released by Swiss and Belgian news media.
Those polls showed Hollande with 52 to 53 percent of the vote in an election that turned on solutions for Europe's economic crisis amid record unemployment in France.
French voters were still headed to cast their ballots when the exit polls were released in the early evening _ the results of exit polls cannot be published in France until voting ends at 8 p.m., 2 p.m. Eastern _ but the outcome seemed all but certain.

SARKOZY HEADING FOR LOSS TO SOCIALIST
53.3-46.7
BELGIAN BLOGGERS BREAKS RULES AND RELEASE RESULTS
Early exit polls leaked to the Belgian media two hours before French polls are due to close showed Mr. Hollande leading current president Nicolas Sarkozy, receiving between 52.5 and 53 per cent of the vote to Mr. Sarkozy’s 47 to 47.5 per cent.
There is no way to know the accuracy of the exit-poll results, which are conducted by firms working for French political parties and are illegal to publish, broadcast or communicate within France until after polls close.
If that result holds true when polls close at 8:00 p.m. Sunday (2:00 p.m. EST), then France will be headed to the end 17 years of conservative presidencies, and end the five-year rule of Mr. Sarkozy, whose leadership was marked by a flamboyant personal style, recurring confrontations with immigrants and ethnic minorities, and free-market reforms that were only sometimes delivered.
A Hollande presidency will make France virtually the only major European country with a left-wing leader, and would mark a major shift in Europes balance of power.
No surprise, but I’ll never trust exit polls after 2004.
The socialist won’t roll back the lower retirement age or other money saving things though.
At least in france, the socialist actually wants france to survive. Unlike here where the leftists hate this country.
Why bother counting votes when you have exit polls?
One socialist beats another. whipee.
France: A Sharia-state in 5-10 years.
All of them are left leaning by our standards
Thanks Cincinna.
Trouble for the US (and France of course, but no one had a gun to their heads) with the EU and UN, and the jihadist world, as a consequence of this French election.
This is not similar to American exit polls.
It is the official count that will be announced officially in France at 8pm French time (2pm EST)
These are the official numbers leaked to media in Belgium and Luxembourg.
Sadly, for Sarkozy and for France, they are accurate, and correspond almost exactly to the last poll.
Once again, the French prefer being sold Communism by the drink. Long live early retirement, six-week vacations, and 32-hour work weeks!
La Mort de l’Euro.
Very dumb from the French...Sarkosky was the best President in the Fifth French Republic...This socialist fool Hollande would destroy them.
And free bree and snails for everybody!
With this new Socialist, I’d give it 2-3 years at best.
And what, pray tell, are the "solutions" that Hollande offers?
Follow the "Obama Plan" and print more money to pay the people not to work?
On his mother's side he's part Greek Jewish and part French Catholic by descent, according to his Wikipedia biography.
Frederic Bastiat must be spinning in his grave (again).
Too bad, I’ve enjoyed the various pics of Carla and the 1st Wookie.

Well that’s really dumb to publish numbers while people are still voting.
