California’s 4th year of mass teacher pink slips spurs concerns about layoff process

LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles Unified teacher Mike Newman sighed when he saw the now familiar certified letter in his mailbox last month — a pink slip, for the fourth year in a row.

“Here we go again,” said Newman, a 14-year classroom veteran who’s had his previous three layoffs rescinded and hopes for the same this year. “We keep thinking it’ll get better sooner or later, but it’s not.”

A new term is being bandied about in California schools these days — “the RIFing season,” which refers to the “reduction in force” letters notifying teachers they may be laid off at the end of the school year.

Some want the annual practice, which gives teachers advance notice that their jobs are in jeopardy depending on the outcome of the state budget debate, changed because it unnecessarily saps morale and incurs administrative expenses since most of those employees will not be laid off.

School districts sent out 20,000 warning notices in March — the fourth consecutive year of mass cuts due to continued state funding shortfalls, but if the past three years are anything to go by, roughly a quarter of those teachers will actually lose their jobs.

“This is a process that doesn’t need to be happening,” said Warren Fletcher, president of United Teachers Los Angeles, the teachers union for the Los Angeles Unified School District where 9,500 educators received layoff notices in March. “This is a quarter of our teachers. The district couldn’t operate without a quarter of its teachers. They never should’ve issued that number.”

In a survey of 230 school districts, the state Legislative Analyst’s Office found that roughly 75 percent of teachers who received layoff warnings were either never laid off or laid off and called back to work,

So why is it that an ultraliberal one-party State like California is conducting mass layoffs of teachers?

Could it be because liberalism is a fraud?

Bring your pay package back to the level that is in line with the current economy and it just might stop happening. Unions that promise to make you wealthy are frauds.

Here either, those public schools increasingly churn out half literate, innumerate Marxists. Let those teachers join the soup lines with their most recent OWS products.

Promises they have no intention of keeping. This is just a way to force taxpayers to bend over again.

However, we don’t see pink slips for assistant principals, diversity affairs department, human resources etc.

Only the teachers get pink slips?

We’re not buying it.

Jim

Your governor wants to put a tax increase on the ballot in November. If it passes, I suspect he’s not going to be running for re-election.

Why don’t you put your name in the hat?

Without doubt, Jim Robinson does not want to be governor, but that is not what I posted to point out. California is a one-party Democrat state where a conservative cannot be governor. I don’t think a republican can even be governor.

Arnold proved that a Hollywood Moviestar who played strong men in the movies could still get elected governor, even if he pretended to be a Republican. But a real Republican, especially a conservative, can’t get elected in California.

It is over. Stick a fork in the state. It will be nothing but liberal socialist Democrats from here on out.

"roughly 75 percent of teachers who received layoff warnings were either never laid off or laid off and called back to work"

Lest they forget, the teachers subject to this merry-go-round have liberals (e.g., Ted Kennedy) to thank for this. When laws are passed requiring 60-day notice before a layoff (rather than being told when you walk in the door on your last day) then the organization just keeps issuing pink slips "just in case" each year. So the advance notice clause does no one any good.

Another example of the law of unintended connsequences.
