Pelosi calls on Obama to respect states’ rights, end medical marijuana raids

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi wants President Barack Obama to lay off the weed.
Reacting to an ongoing crackdown on medical marijuana facilities in California, Pelosi said in a Wednesday statement, “I have strong concerns about the recent actions by the federal government that threaten the safe access of medicinal marijuana to alleviate the suffering of patients in California.”
The California Democrat said that medical marijuana is “both a medical and a states’ rights issue.”
California legalized the use of medical marijuana in a 1996 initiative vote. It’s comically easy for many residents to acquire the necessary medical diagnosis to legally purchase the drug.
In 2009, Attorney General Eric Holder announced that the Obama administration would “effectively end the Bush administration’s frequent raids on distributors of medical marijuana.”

there is a lot more to states rights than the mj issue.
1. Obama decides he is for Gay Marriage and promises to repeal DOMA, (even though he refused to enforce it anyway).
2. Obama decides that all Home Mortgages will be refinanced at One Percent Interest with no Income Qualifying or Appraisal required. It will be illegal to foreclose on a Home unless you are a prominent Democrat Donor. Coincidentally, George Clooney and Jon Corzine will partner on a new Housing Development called Pharaoh Obama Village.
3. Student Loans will be forgiven five years after Graduation. If you never Graduate, don't worry about it.
4. Parents will be able to keep their Children on their Health Insurance until the Children can apply for Medicare.
5. Gun Control will skip the wasteful Registration Phase and jump ahead to Total Confiscation. The Legaliation will be named “The Trayvon Martin Bill”. Obama will symbolically sign the Bill at the new George Zimmerman Museum of Racial Hatred. An Official Hoodie will be sold at the Museum Store with all proceeds sent to the Debbie Wasserman Schultz Center for the Cure of Frizzy Hair.
6. Talk Radio will be outlawed and replaced with an endless loop of President Obama singing Michelle Obama’s favorite Al Green Hits.
7. The entire U.S. Military will be outsourced to China after we sell them Taiwan and Israel to forgive the National Debt. Taiwan and Israel won't be notified of the Sale until our former Submarine Fleet's ICBM’s are targeted to strike Taiwan and Israel.
They are all pretty straight laced, but I hear that they do partake at home when self medication is required. Small Company, no snack machines there. LOL

Personally, I have no problem with Marijuana being Legalized with the same restrictions that Alcohol and Cigarettes have.
In CA, even with the Liberal Medical Marijuana Laws, it really isn't a problem from my experience. I don't partake, but there are more than a few “Conservative”, or should I say “Libertarian” Freepers who have admitted using it.
Since Marijuana would have a “second hand smoke” issue that Alcohol does not have, there would need to be many more restrictions on its use.

Some doctors will prescribe marijuana just for a rash on your foot. This is the problem with this whole game.
Restricting possession and use to those 21 years or older, again like Alcohol. The only relation to Cigarette use is the fact that the smoke can be ingested by others who choose otherwise. In other words, not in Public.
I speak from experience. My older Brother took me to the Cream Farewell Concert when I was around 13 or so. We were in the Nosebleed seats at the Forum in L.A. (I think), and all I remember is the cloud of smoke rising to the ceiling. Never smelled it before then. That and the guy sitting one row down handing a Joint back to us which my Brother politely declined. He mentioned my young age to the generous fellow who apologized. It was a nice friendly No Bogart kind of crowd, if you know what I mean.

Absolutely no smoking it before or while operating vehicles, absolutely a must. Not sure how it is measured, but I'm sure there could be some standards. Don't really know.
As long as it doesn't affect someone else, no problem. I guess restricting it to indoor use on private property would be acceptable.
I'm not really into writing Legislation. Just common sense stuff that a consenting adult does behind closed doors.
I look at it the same way I look at Alcohol. Of course, it affects people differently and I hear the stuff they grow nowadays is nothing like the weak stuff that was around forty years ago. Heck, I had a Uncle tell me that they smoked Pot when he was a kid back in the Thirties.

Republicans are just as shameless. They scream "states rights" when it suits their purposes, but when the war on drugs comes into play, suddenly that's all out the window.

Opiates are incredibly physically addictive and even toxic at high doses. When taken out of their coating, they are pretty much identical to heroin. Pot is not physically addictive at all and completely non-toxic. It also impairs less than opiates.
I've seen many first-hand examples of people getting opiates like candy. Last month my friend jammed his finger and lost a nail. He got Vicodin just by saying the codeine was too weak. Another had a small surface cyst removed a few weeks ago. They gave him Percocet right away.
There are ‘pain clinics’ busted all the time for selling pills to anyone that comes in. If you think the people wearing tie-die in front of the pot shops are bad, check out the outright junkies shaking in front of these pill mills waiting for the doors to open in the morning. In fact, you often see the same types hanging around pharmacies.
False - the beneficial medicinal properties of marijuana are well established.
Is that a federalism ping list? Can I get on it?
That's also true for other abusable medications - see post #33.
I think you should rephrase the question, since (as I know you know) the feds have no legitimate Commerce Clause authority to regulate intrastate drug matters.
