Tea party will ‘absolutely’ back Romney in general election, says movement leader
The Daily Caller ^ | April 24, 2012 | Jamie Weinstein

Though the tea party wasn’t particularly enthused about Mitt Romney’s presidential candidacy during the primary, one tea party leader who was present at the inception of the movement says the tea party will get behind the former Massachusetts governor going into the general election.

“Absolutely, the tea party can and will support Mitt Romney in the general election, and with great energy in the door-to-door ground game,” said Michael Patrick Leahy, co-founder of The Nationwide Tea Party Coalition and author of the recently released book, “Covenant of Liberty: The Ideological Origins of the Tea Party Movement.”

“It’s important also to note that this is a strong sentiment at the local level — among the 3,000-plus local tea parties.”

“Though on the core values, Mitt Romney’s not as aligned with us as Michele Bachmann, he’s far superior to Barack Obama,” Leahy added.

“Our job in the tea party movement is to cautiously but vigorously befriend Romney, while reserving the right to encourage him — continuously — to align more closely with our core values. This encouragement to align has already begun, and it will continue through and beyond election day.”

Leahy also pushed back against the notion that the tea party is becoming increasingly irrelevant.

“[T]he tea party’s grassroots get-out-the-vote activities will be the deciding force of the 2012 presidential election,” he contested.

Yeah, I trust somebody named "Michael Patrick Leahy".
I guess he means that he and the other three guys who meet in his basement every couple of weeks have decided they will vote for the liberal Romney. Whoop-de-doo. Who is this self-proclaimed "tea party leader" anyway? I never heard of him.

More specificly: I reject your implications and insinuation on this one thread today. You tell me you are a good Conservative but that has nothing to do with this thread.

Staying home is not an option, not that you said it is. There are many other conservatives to support with our vote so I will go do it.

But, unless there’s a change in the D & R leading candidates, I want to voice my opposition to both in writing. That means, for instance, voting for the Constitution Party Presidential slate. Otherwise, a non-vote shows up nowhere.

Absolutely, the tea party can and will support the election of conservatives to the House and the Senate in the general election, and with great energy in the door-to-door ground game, especially if we are stuck with Romney as the only viable alternative to another four years of Obama. If we’re guaranteed to suffer under one of those two big government liberals, we need the most conservative Congress possible to restrain their instincts to expand government and encroach on personal freedom. I will be voting in November - but not for a socialist or any other anti-freedom, big government leftist.

Suit yourself. I am not going to sit back and put up with 4 more years of Obozo. There will be nothing left to fight for later.

Nothing could be worse than the way things are now.

That wasn’t in DC, was it? It sounds familiar to what happened in DC at the Tea Party.

Romney won a majority of tea party folks over Santorum during many of the primaries.

Where do you come up with this manure? Obamney hasn't won a single Tea Partier over. It's why he can't crack 30%. You mittbots need to go back to DU where you belong.

No, it was at the Fresno tea party on the way to dc for the big one.

They were trying to get a message to me that they wanted me to say a few things (at the DC 9-11-20009 event), but the message hit a road block unfortunately.

It would have been good to get Free Republic mentioned at that huge gathering.

And oh yes, that was a prominent tea party message.

No official “leader,” we are all the leaders.

That is what makes it work.

Someone should tell Michael Patrick Leahy and his fancy title that the tea party has NO LEADER and thus can not be spoken on behalf-of by one random idiot.

Conservatives don’t vote for liberals. It’s very simple.

I also did my best to get a more conservative person nominated. However, it is more important to get rid of Obama than it is to protest against the republican party. He may not be my first or second choice, but at least he is not a communist and a person who wants to destroy our country like Obama wants to.

I think the worst thing to happen to that movement was for it to have a name.

Now some jackass thinks is speaking for the people. He can speak for himself!
