Though the tea party wasnt particularly enthused about Mitt Romneys presidential candidacy during the primary, one tea party leader who was present at the inception of the movement says the tea party will get behind the former Massachusetts governor going into the general election.
Absolutely, the tea party can and will support Mitt Romney in the general election, and with great energy in the door-to-door ground game, said Michael Patrick Leahy, co-founder of The Nationwide Tea Party Coalition and author of the recently released book, Covenant of Liberty: The Ideological Origins of the Tea Party Movement.
Its important also to note that this is a strong sentiment at the local level among the 3,000-plus local tea parties.
Though on the core values, Mitt Romneys not as aligned with us as Michele Bachmann, hes far superior to Barack Obama, Leahy added.
Our job in the tea party movement is to cautiously but vigorously befriend Romney, while reserving the right to encourage him continuously to align more closely with our core values. This encouragement to align has already begun, and it will continue through and beyond election day.
Leahy also pushed back against the notion that the tea party is becoming increasingly irrelevant.
[T]he tea partys grassroots get-out-the-vote activities will be the deciding force of the 2012 presidential election, he contested.

Who died and left this Jackass in charge of speaking for Tea Party members? Romney can pound liberal sand.
I wouldn’t count on it.
I won't vote for a liberal, regardless of party affiliation.
Since you romneybots have no legitimate argument, you try to belittle conservatives.
Like an abused spouse that says "It will be different this time", and the GOP knows that they can count on you to vote for whatever crap liberal they push. Sad.
Romney WILL lose.

I've done absolutely all I can do to get a conservative nominated. I've sent out money until it hurts and put in countless hours on this computer.
I've even griped at other Freepers if I thought they were giving up in mid battle. I don't believe I could have done any more.
Now it looks like the only choice I can live with is to vote AGAINST Obama.
I have a 20 year old grandson in the Florida National Guard and Obama as commander in chief for four more years just scares the crap out of me. My kid deserves much better.
“The title is misleading SOP fodder coming from RomBots.”
Perzactly correct. So, what is the true intended function of this Nationwide Tea Party Coalition gambit?
Would you please ask your friends at the Tea Party Express what they think of this?
Did anyone else see lefty Doug Schoen on FOX this morning fawning over Mitty? Romney is a democrat and any “conservative” who votes for him can consider themselves to be democrats from here on out.
Romney won a majority of tea party folks over Santorum during many of the primaries.
They realize that if Obama is re-elected that it means the end of the constitution, the end of this country.
He needs to be discredited, everywhere he shows up.
This guy got a mouse in his pocket? He might vote for Romney, but nobody I know will...
Newt will have my vote in June, if he stays in till then. After that, Romney will have my vote, if for no other reason than I dislike him less than I dislike Obama.
Nice try Jamie, but no sale.
For future reference, tea party folks are quite independent minded and a ‘leader’ is the last thing we want or need. Second, we want our country back and obama-lite ain’t gonna cut it.
I understand all of this is foreign to you, but try to take some time to read - and learn - some American history.
This so-called leader is speaking for himself, and no-one else.
All the Tea-Party Christians I know, will not be voting for Romney.
I’m making sure they know his record, and his record is enough to wave them off on a vote for this lying, left-wing, Progressive Liberal.
NO chance whatsoever.
That’s right. The tea party has got to TAKE OVER the pub party if it wants to have stronger influence over who gets in the sweepstakes to run for potus. It’s power politics. The gop-E wants a “moderate” who can appeal to “independents” who voted for that man last time. We say that strategy is ineffective. Until we have enough clout to force their hand, WE are irrelevant.
In other words, fight like hell but don’t take it personally.
