We wish it weren't so. But the evidence keeps coming in that other states, such as Texas and its Sun Belt neighbors, are doing something right in promoting business and jobs creation, and California is doing something terribly wrong. The U.S. Census Bureau just released estimates of the top 10 fastest-growing metropolitan areas, by population, from April 1, 2010, to July 1, 2011. Not one was in California.
The fastest-growing was Kennewick-Pasco-Richland, Wash., which grew 4.3 percent during the 15-month period. It enjoys a diverse economy and Washington's lack of a state income tax. Second-fastest growing was Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos, Texas, at 3.9 percent. It has become an educational and high-tech powerhouse and – notice a trend? – Texas has no state income tax.

In states like TX and NV state regulators ask how they can help new businesses, offer ways to meet regulations of which there are a lot fewer. Those former CA business owners were amazed to find government officials who actually appreciated having them open a business in their community.

As a new resident of the Tri Cities, (Kennewick . .), I see a lot of former Cali residents. Back when I lived in Texas, same story. Talking to one ex-Californan, he told me that he was amazed how cheap houses were in the suburbs north of Dallas area. He actually bought two houses because ‘they were a deal’.
They are indeed like a virus that infects and kills the host, then move on to a new one, ready to destroy it and repeat the process again.
Nevada is a noted exception.

Drove through Dallas this last week on the way to Oklahoma from Houston. I thought traffic was bad in Houston - Dallas has surpassed us in this category it seems. Was also amazed at the amount of highway construction going on in Dallas. Corsicana north to the Red River is just one long continuous solid stream of traffic. Was nice to be in Oklahoma for a few days. Heard not one word of Spanish for four days - plus gas is a lot less expensive in Oklahoma.
Nevada had a good twenty year run, from 1989 - 2009.

My best friend's brother lives in California. She told me one of the things he pays along with property taxes is a *view tax*.
It was 10 minutes before I stopped laughing long enough for her to explain what it was. ;-)

The LibTard (might be misspelled) center of Texas (Austin) considered such a tax for the hilltops around Lake Travis. I don’t know if it was enacted.
I live north of Austin and read the online Austin newspaper to find out what is happening around the area. It is rapidly becoming more like California everyday, but the hot local economy is pumping in the tax dollars to support their bike bridges and solar power efforts...
I have not spent a taxable dollar there since they boycotted Arizona...
I believe that they have that tax in New Hampshire too.

It was also startled by the fact it probably was an actual tax somewhere, either. My husband and I carefully chose a house in an unincorporated area northwest of Austin to avoid ....inconveniences.
