Romney gaining conservatives' support, if not their hearts
Washington Post ^ | apr 19, 2012 | Rosalind S. Helderman and Sandhya Somashekhar

Mitt Romney was not his first choice for president, but conservative political activist Scott Magill has come to accept that Romney is now his only choice. So Magill is looking for reasons to get jazzed about the candidate he once dismissed.

His list so far: Romney is a Republican who would sign into law legislation passed by a GOP-led House. Romney has started to hit the right talking points. If elected, Romney would have to listen to the conservative base - or risk its wrath at reelection time.

Also, and perhaps most important, Romney is not Barack Obama.

The conservative base appears to be warming to Romney, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll conducted after Santorum's exit, which found that about 80 percent of conservative Republicans hold favorable views of Romney - a record percentage for the candidate.

Santorum's withdrawal from the field has opened the door for many groups that had been uncomfortable with his candidacy to embrace Romney, including the National Right to Life; the Susan B. Anthony List; National Organization for Marriage, which opposes same-sex marriage.

I think we need to concentrate on our state governments a lot more. They are the key to resistance.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

Obama is my enemy.

Elections are ALWAYS about defeating the worst candidate, since nobody is perfect.

Try reading what the man stands for...that may help.

Help prove Romney is full of it. I judge a man by his action. Not his sales pitch.

Because Romney and Ubama are leading us to the same place!

I won't vote for a Liberal just because he has an "R" next to his name. Being a Republican doesn't magically make you less Socialist. They are both Leftists. I will not vote for that!

Always vote for principle, though you may vote alone, you may cherish the sweetest reflection that your vote is never lost, while an appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last, i.e. Romney turning (whats left) of the GOP into a Center-Left party.

Conservatives don’t do what Willard did. It doesn’t matter what State or state of mind. You may call yourself whatever you wish! Saying it doesn’t make it so!

“I understand that it is difficult for someone like you to understand that he was governor of a very liberal state and as their governor had to govern in a more liberal way than you or I would have liked, but he is a conservative in my humble opinion”

Just so much snake oil there. Gun control, gay marriage and Romneycare- none of those are remotely conservative actions, whether you are in Massachusetts or on the moon. The man is the sum of his actions, not his words- and the lame excuse that he did these out of political expediency makes it that much worse- it indicates a man who holds no principles sacred, who like Obama is unworthy of the Presidency. If he would sell out enough to take these actions, the question is only that of how far left will he go, not if.

“Try reading what the man stands for...that may help.”

Romney has proven that he will say/do anything to get elected. Rather than blindly listening to his talking points, judge him by his record.

So you have a minor in Econ and have worked in campaigns for forty years...so what? Does that make you uniquely qualified to judge a candidate’s “severely conservative” credentials? I’d say there are more than a few Democrats with your same “qualifications”. Ha ha ha

By the way, I’m pretty sure linking to that socialist POS’s website will get you zotted fast.

Peddle your garbage on DU. The readers there line up with your candidate better than anyone on FR.

That is the way our Founders envisioned our Nation

The Local level of Government, Citizens gathering together to Govern their communities.

Now we have a Democratic Kleptocracy with no regard to the fabric of this nation and who slowly (now its quickly) driving it towards collapse and civil unrest/war. Damn them!

Romney is neither a real Republican nor a Conservative.

You must have been asleep.

I AM NOT a ‘ROMNEY SUPPORTER’. I AM AN ‘OBAMA OPPONENT’.

Then you vote for the pandering blue blood from Mass. From my perspective neither are acceptable. Both are liberals. Neither gets my vote.

I hear the now that Portman is all the rage. Yes, we need a safe selection that will satisfy the mushy middle. NOT!!

At some point we need to stand up and fight. If not now then when?

"It amazes me how many obama supporters there are on Free Republic! Wrapping themselves up in some delusional “rational” that Romney is not a conservative and that he is a liberal. Sounds like the brainwashing of the democrat party is alive and well here!"

You really shouldn't be drinking on a Sunday morning.

Romney is an abortion-enabling, sodomite-supporting, gun-banning, global-warming believing,tax-raising LIBERAL. Also, he walks like a gay duck.

( If elected, Romney would have to listen to the conservative base - or risk its wrath at reelection time.)

If he wasn’t willing to listen to us to get elected the first time, why in the world would he listen to us as with all the advantages of being the incumbent president (very little likelihood of being challenged in the primary).

If he’s on my ballot, I’ll vote for Goode as well.

Its no more a wasted vote than voting for Romney.

I don 't give a tinkers damn about the pubbie party and whether is is center left or center right.

I do care about the United States of America, our Constitution and the keeper thereof.

If you really believe that obama and romney will treat the vows that they take to protect and defend The Constitution of the United States of America, exactly the same, there is no point in discussing any further.

If I believed that, I'd agree with you, but I see a very large divide between the character of obama and romney, one is an American, the other is a communist, and if you think they are the same, then ...

I would go so far as to say that there is zero chance of him facing a primary challenger. Romney is nothing more than the GOP's last ditch attempt at crushing conservatives.

I'm expecting him to come up with a RINO VP and really prove how obtuse he is!

Outside of Massachusetts Romney is on foreign territory and doesn't speak a common language.
