The greening of a classic car makes it unrecognizable to drivers.
The Ford Motor Company is giving its Mustang a unique 50th birthday present: death.
Detroit will still market an automobile called the Mustang. It just won't bear much of a resemblance to the iconic roadster driven by the likes of Lt. Frank Bullitt and James Bond.
Ford's new "Evos" concept features gull-wing doors, a rounded, aerodynamic body, and a smaller design clearly inspired by Europe. When Ford officially unveils its new Mustang in 2014, company insiders insist it will embrace this visual transformation.
More pertinent than its changing look will be its changing feel. Rumors abound, to the chagrin of drag racers, regarding the introduction of independent rear suspension. The five-liter engine supposedly morphs into a two-liter one. There is even talk of a hybrid Mustang.
Why not a hang-glider F-18?
A 2012 Ford Mustang boasting an eight-cylinder, five-liter engine goes from zero to sixty in less than five seconds. It takes a lot of fuel to generate all that power. The muscle car travels an average of twenty miles for every gallon of gasoline consumed. It's a performance car, albeit one that performs the way that drivers, rather than bureaucrats, want.
Twenty miles per gallon is considerably less than fifty-six miles to the gallon. That is the 2025 industry fuel-efficiency standard announced by the Obama Administration last year. With automakers having to produce a fleet of cars traveling an average of further than 56 miles per gallon by 2025, and further than 34 miles per gallon by 2016, a Mustang guzzling a gallon of gas every twenty miles would be certain to bring the fleet average below the mandated standard.

The new Mustang is due as a 2014 model, and will look somewhat like an Aston Martin, the high-price sports car often featured in James Bond movies. People who have seen the new Mustang said it is almost a body double for the Evos concept car that Ford showed at the Frankfurt auto show last fall.
That’s the one I’d get. It’s the closest thing to a reasonably priced super sports car.
Anyone unfamiliar with new Mustangs may wish to look into them before they’re discontinued. What began as a cheap fun little car has grown into a (yes, uncheap)very good quality machine (both its 6 and v8 models). There are exactly 2 vehicles people line up for at the local Ford dealer,Mustangs and the trucks (altho those have tough competition ). Ford without real Mustangs will be like Kelloggs without cereal.
Gay Test - If the first thing you notice is the car, I’ve got some bad news for you.
Looks like a fancy version of the new Fusion. You're right - it's not bad at all, but it's no more a Mustang than the Mazda-based Ford Probe almost was.
I predict that like the Probe, this gets offered alongside the Mustang.
There’s a car in that picture?
It is a camarotang! I like it, but I will keep my 2012 shelby gt 500 for now.
The EPA will soon ban all cars that can make their tires smoke by accelerating. There is a safety exemption that allows smoking tires produce by rapid braking. However the new black box will determine if the driver was at fault and, if so, appropriate fines will be charged to their credit card. No credit card? No one will be allowed to purchase a new or used car or license plates without having a major credit card. Armed Black Panther members will strictly enforce the federal no smoking ordinance and may legally kill those white people they detect smoking their tires.
“`Probe’? I think I like it!” Barry Obama
Probe was almost the Mustang. 1994

Ain’t gonna work. I would suggest buying a Mustang now, before they destroy it.
The car handled fine even on winding roads, the weight of the engine kept the front end on the ground when you kept your foot on the brake and put the throttle to the floor, then release brake pedal, what a thrill that was. The car handled even better when I got rid of the poly-glass wide ovals and put on T/A radials 60 series. And by the way I also replaced the original distributor with an Accel dual point w/50000 volt coil.
I’ll take the two on the left.

**************
The Mustang, which has had a strong retro look since 2005, is losing steam, too. Last year Ford sold 70,438, down 4.4% from 2010 and less than half the 166,530 it sold in 2006.
This is because the 2005-2009 models were the most strongly "retro", looking like the '69-'70 Fastback models - arguably the first-generation Mustang's zenith with the Mach 1, Boss 302 and Boss 429. In '71, the car got big and bloated, like a variant of the Torino. Despite increases in performance from 2010-12, the cars are NOT as attractive.
Another BIG reason (duh, Ford/WSJ) is that Dodge brought the Challenger to market in 2008 and Chevy rolled the new Camaro out in 2010. Of course Ford is going to lose some sales to the non-brand-loyal buyers who now have a choice. Even Hyundai is after a piece of Ford's ponycar action with the Genesis coupe.
You just made me sports some wood!
When I was a teenager and muscles care ruled our world, I had a boyfried that had a beautiful sky blue Roadrunner with a white top. We used to get on the highway in front of my house poor bleach on the road and make beautiful white smoke with those tires. I have some pictures somewhere. If I knew how to post them I would.
