CNN Poll: Gender Gap And Likeability Keep Obama Over Romney

CNN Political Editor Paul Steinhauser

(CNN) - President Barack Obama holds a nine-point lead over Republican challenger Mitt Romney thanks in part to the perception that the president is more likeable and more in touch with the problems facing women and middle class Americans, according to a new national poll.

A CNN/ORC International poll released Monday also indicates a large gender gap that benefits Obama, but the public is divided on which candidate can best jump-start the economy.

According to the poll, 52% of registered voters say if the presidential election were held today, they would vote for the president, with 43% saying they would cast a ballot for Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who is making his second bid for the White House. The poll was conducted Friday through Sunday, a few days after former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania suspended his bid for the GOP nomination. Even though former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Rep. Ron Paul of Texas continue their long-shot bids for the nomination, Romney is now generally considered the presumptive nominee.

The survey indicates women voters back Obama over Romney by 16 points (55%-39%), virtually unchanged from an 18-point advantage among women for the president in CNN polling last month.

The poll was conducted two days after Democratic strategist and CNN contributor Hilary Rosen created a controversy by saying that Ann Romney "never worked a day in her life."

"That remark may have little long-term effect on women voters," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "By a two-to-one margin, the women surveyed saw President Obama as more in touch with the problems facing American women today."

This is the sorry state of our national electorate. Or shall we say, the "female vote'?

The only person who came close to bridging the yawning gender gap and the one Obama feared most was Santorum and he's now out of the race.

This nation is moving headlong over the cliff.

Too bad CNN that the majority of Americans laugh at your polls.

yep...what are the internals on this poll? How many dim’s polled vs repubs polled? And likely voter polls are typically more accurate than registered voter polls.

What American women are looking for (apparently) is an angry Muslim man who hates them.

LOL. Wrong. Rick would have divided that gap even further.

I looked all over the pdf for the “internals” on this poll...how many Rs/Ds/Is (republicans/democrats/independents) there were....couldn’t find them.

This “poll” was taken over three days. Of “adults”, and “registered” voters.

Looks like CNN and the Obama campaign (but I repeat myself) got wind that the Gallup poll wasn’t going to be in their favor so this piece of crap was created out of whole cloth.

Women as a group are easily frightened. Even by an angry hooga booga man who jumps out and shouts Boo! at them. I don't expect this effect to last, however, after the cranky "War on Women" BS fades with passing time.

Geez. Looking at this poll, it was designed to give Obummer a boost. CNN is really pulling out all the stops to prop up their POS.

I guess our Founders were right in thinking women were not fit to vote. Today, the losers who can’t run their own lives properly look to the government to confiscate the earnings of others to support them and their children. With mothers such as these parasites, their children will expect others to take care of them.

As someone pointed out almost three decades ago when talk of the “gender gap” started, “which blade of the scissors cuts the paper?”

In other words, why is Obama so unpopular with men? And this isn’t a situation where they focus on the problems of the guy who is trailing — the “gender gap” was invented as a way to attack Ronald Reagan.

Reagan would be up 20 points among men and 5 points among women and the MSM would talk about how he was unpopular among women. Obama’s up 18 points among women and something like even with men and the MSM is talking about how he’s popular among women.

CNN!! With no internals and sketchy, inaccurate sampling. Treat this as a partisan, outlier push poll which is exactly what it is.

........ Total... Dem . Ind. Rep Lib Mod. Conservative
-—— -—— ——— ——— -—— -—— -———
Obama.. 44% 77% 41% 8% 75% 52% 21%
Romney 42% 10% 43% 82% 13% 34% 68%

This is for the “who will win the election” question. I’m a little shocked that he got 21% of the conservative vote. and 52% of the moderates. This poll seems pretty bogus to me.

They only polled women on welfare.
