3 Catholic churches refuse anti- same-sex marriage petition drive (Seattle)

Three Catholic churches and counting are refusing to be part of the petition drive to overturn the state's new marriage equality law.

St. Joseph's parish is one of at least three local Catholic churches deciding they don't want the fight over gay marriage to have a place there during Sunday services, in spite of a strong message from the Seattle Archbishop.

Earlier this year, Seattle Archbishop Peter Sartain testified against the gay marriage bill in Olympia.

"I urge you to uphold the definition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman," he said then.

And when the bill passed, the Archdiocese put its weight behind Referendum 74 to overturn the gay marriage law.

But now it's stepping into politics with a letter to area parishes authorizing them to get behind the referendum.

"The Archbishop made it very clear he supports placing Referendum 74 on the ballot," said Archdiocese Spokesman Greg Magnoni.

The Archdiocese says the majority of churches in Western Washington will start collecting signatures this Sunday.

Great opportunity to save money. Cut them off, put the pastors in monasteries under a vow of silence, and close the churches.

The Bishop must impose discipline. Remove the parish priest promptly. Whatever happened to the vow of obedience?

Guzzo applauds her parish leaders at St. Mary's, at St. Joseph's and even at St. James Cathedral downtown who have all decided not to allow the petition drives.

Referendum 74
You may have heard about a petition drive concerning Referendum 74, which will be gathering signatures at a number of parishes in Seattle. Please be aware that Fr. Whitney has decided that no petitioning will be permitted anywhere on the campus of St. Joseph. Please contact Fr. Whitney with any concerns.

St. James Cathedral - Seattle

Dear Friends,

Archbishop Sartain has written a letter in which he has expressed his support for Referendum 74 and for the collecting of signatures in parishes. Media reports regarding this are somewhat misleading. While the Archbishop has given his support to the effort, he has wisely left it up to each pastor to decide whether to allow the collection of signatures in his own parish.

After discussing the matter with the members of the Cathedral's pastoral ministry team, I have decided that we will not participate in the collecting of signatures in our parish. Doing so would, I believe, prove hurtful and seriously divisive in our community. In saying this, I do realize that there are some who will be disappointed with this decision.

I am grateful to the Archbishop for giving pastors discretion in this matter.  He knows that we are in the best position to make this judgment.

Father Ryan

The parishioners should promptly join another parish.

The cathedral parish pastor is a faux Catholic - to love someone is to be honest with them about the fundamentals of life; that relationships based on homosexual sex (anal intercourse, fellatio, analingus, cunilingus, and the insertion of objects into body cavities) are debauched and empty and harmful to the individuals and to society is a very important fundamental truth of life.

Too bad the faux pastors misunderstand what it means to love a homosexual person (pun intended).

...we will not participate in the collecting of signatures in our parish

I am not surprised to see continuing heresy at St. James Cathedral. Several years ago I found myself in Seattle on business that included the weekend. I attended Sunday services at that magnificent cathedral. The church was within walking distance of my hotel. I noticed a couple of unusual items. One was that over 90% of the alter servers were girls; only two very young boys, under 6 years of age. Also the homily was rambling and incoherent and given by a woman. I do not know her role in the church.

I pray that the parish leaders repent from their heresy, and return to obedience of the most holy, Catholic church.

“I am grateful to the Archbishop for giving pastors discretion in this matter. He knows that we are in the best position to make this judgment.

Father Ryan”

Father Ryan does not appear to be worried about his eternal judgement, nor that of the parishioners in his care. Tis may then be a great time to extend prayers on behalf of his need for guidance, for both his sake and theirs, to the proper path. In other words, pray for the good father’s change of ways, and perhaps send a polite, respectful note regarding the apparent discrepancy between his actions and Church teachings, to the good archbishop.

Fr. Michael Ryan is the same priest that started the “What if we said wait?” “movement,” in opposition to the new missal.

I think that tells you most of what you need to know to explain this current action.
