ALBANY - NAACP President Benjamin Jealous told an Albany Law School lecture hall on Wednesday afternoon the arrest of George Zimmerman is a "great moment for our country" even though it is long over due.
"People of Sanford (Florida) have been tortured," Jealous says, "Our country has been torn apart just waiting for the man to simply be arrested."
On that point, you'll find no disagreement from Alice Green of the Center for Law and Justice.
"It should have happened a long time ago," Green insists. "There was certainly always probable cause to arrest him and people are outraged because they understand that."
The problem for Albany Law School Professor Laurie Shanks is the perception that Zimmerman was treated differently then if the situation were reversed.
"The racial part of this is, the belief that most of us who have been working in the criminal justice system have seen, that if a black man had shot an unarmed white man, he would be arrested," Shanks said.
"If it takes this long to get an arrest, something is wrong with the entire department," opined Albany Law School Professor Anthony Paul Farley.
Farley thinks the real crime was committed by Sanford Police. He believes the case was bungled from the onset and that detectives need to be arrested.
"One fears for any black person in Sanford, Florida," he says. "One fears for anybody who knows a black person in Sanford, Florida. One fears for anyone in Sanford, Florida with a police department like that."
Also problematic, according to Jealous, is the Florida law that allows residents to carry concealed handguns and not have to worry about backing down from a confrontation.
"We parted ways with Wild West justice a long time ago in this country," Jealous says, "Unfortunately, the Stand Your Ground Law is threatening to bring it back. It has brought it back in some places."
The law school consensus seemed to be that the Trayvon Martin Case had nothing to do with Stand Your Ground. They believe it had everything to do with racial profiling.
If there is a silver lining, Benjamin Jealous says it might be that the country is having its first honest conversation about racial profiling and he's hopeful that will lead to something beneficial.
IMHO the worst he can get if they overturn “stand your ground” is manslaughter.
And I believe that will set off a maelstrom.
The Trayvon folks will swear its light and we’ll declare its harsh.
What a mess.
FUBO!
Has nothing to do with “great moment for our country”. Irrelevant & irresponsible statement at best.
However with the reality of the situation what it is, it would be better for Zimmerman’s lawyer(s) to have a chance to cross examine the evidence in a court of law. It is better for Mr. Zimmerman’s personal safety to be declared not guilty in a court than having a bounty hanging on his head by the black panther goons for lack of an arrest. Not that it will stop them and Sharpton to rabble rouse further, but the public opinion in general will favor Zimmerman if found innocent of charges.
Perhaps, but they’ll await further marching orders shortly before the election. This was just a test run. Mission accomplished; Terrorism works!
Here again it was ALLEN WEST’S name was left off the quote above. Here the long url, Tell him what you think. Allen West

Racism by Latinos against blacks must end!
So politics and race pimping, trumping the law, is a great moment for our Country?
This guy is a moron........
With OJ a guilt man got away with murder because he was black...
With Zimmerman a innocent man will be railroaded to a murder convection because victim was black
Yes.
If acquitted or a couple hung juries, where can Zimmerman ever live? He is going to have to go into a witness protection program and change his identity. There will be a bounty on his head forever.
The message sent today was, "If you're attacked, you MUST allow your attacker to kill you or you WILL be arrested." WTF kind of senseless SH!T is this?
Mr Jealous if you truly want to help black people you should be trying to get them to stop killing each other as blacks killing blacks has got to be the leading cause of death in young black folks.........
Yup, much as I was hoping he would not be charged, standing trial is probably the only real way out of the mess he is in. He could have run to south america, but he still would have lived like a fugitive for the rest of his life, and by running, most everyone would have taken that as an admission of guilt. Still, he will not get a fair trial, his only hope is that the evidence is so strongly in his favor that even an unfair trial will find him not guilty, or the jury will be hung.
His mother is Peruvian, perhaps he can live there.
Just because he makes a knee-jerk emotional response doesn’t mean you should do the same.
i dont think he can find impartial jurors, plus if this is a public trial, I wouldnt want my identity known to the masses if the jury is hung or finds him not guilty
But at the time the initial contact was made Zimmerman made the call and was on the phone with the operator. No audible contact was heard during that time as Trayvon walked by his vehicle on the way to the clubhouse awning. Wouldn't it have been recorded? I think it would have been on tape.
Ignorance is a choice.
so long as Obama and Holder support the Black Panthers, Obama can cross off Pennsylvania and Ohio come 2012. Thank God they vote alike. Same with Florida, if Zimmerman goes to jail, Romney will take Florida too. its going to be a black VS white 2012 race (well to some extent).
Meanwhile black on black crime goes on without anyone in the NAACP giving a damn, guess its OK to kill blacks as long as the killers are black
