A political question that may influence financial markets is who will win the White House in 2012. In addressing that, I argued in an earlier post that Mitt Romney is most likely to emerge as the Republican pick based on the Republican Party’s historical preference for candidates who fall short of the nomination after fighting well and stick around for another shot.[i] An important question in assessing the quality of the campaign Romney could deploy for the general election is whom he would choose for a running mate.
Over the summer, Romney remarked that New Jersey Governor Chris Christie would be on his short list for a Vice President,[ii] but this just obscures a real heavyweight prospect for the nomination: Virginia Congressman and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor. Regional and other demographic considerations will make Cantor a formidable prospect to run with Romney:
The Southern Factor
For generations it was conventional wisdom in U.S. politics that between a presidential candidate and running mate, it was a good sell for one to be from the North and the other from the South. Kennedy (Massachusetts)/Johnson (Texas), 1960; Johnson (Texas)/Humphrey (Minnesota), 1964; and Carter (Georgia)/Mondale (Minnesota), 1976, all won national elections using that template, with Nixon (California)/Agnew (Maryland), 1968, 1972, winning on a Western/mid-Atlantic variant. The pattern has weakened as greater mobility has allowed individuals to garner more regional alliances over the course of their lives. George H.W. Bush was raised in New England but built his business and early political career in Texas, while Barack Obama was born in Hawaii, pursued higher education in New York and Massachusetts, and built his career in Illinois.
Nevertheless, North-South coverage is still a strong political asset, and Cantor’s Southern background would complement the pedigree of a Northern Republican like Mitt Romney

OMG, I was going ask if you meant Romney's VP -- as a joke!
Eric Cantor would be a big asset in Virginia and Florida and he would appeal to many though not all conservatives with his voting record. He would also highlight concerns about Obama’s foreign policy and attract a large number of Jewish Democrats to cross party lines.
rino cantor is responsible for “watering down” the stock act, which allows scumbag politicians to get inside info on stock deals.
In 2008, when Eric Cantor’s name was floated as a potential runningmate for John McCain, I supported the notion, since I thought he would provide better balance to the ticket than some of the other names that were mentioned (such as Mitt Romney). And I still believe that Eric Cantor would make a fine VP candidate—for a Protestant presidential candidate, not for a Mormon who is getting no support from Evangelicals. Even with the prevalence of philo-Semiticism among Evangelical Protestants, I don’t think Romney should pick a Jewish (or other non-Protestant) runningmate.

virginia has its advantages over NY, but rino cantor isn’t one of them.
Nothing gets a Dem voting block to cross lines.
McDonell would be a much better choice- at least he could guarantee Virginia.

Mitt could make it worse for himself, if he chooses another RINO as his VP pick. There are lots of RINOS out there, including many RINOS who are mistaken for conservatives, and Mitt, probably, has many RINOS on his short list for VP picks. I’m beyond tired of having the final pick for GOP POTUS being, either, a RINO, or being a “Big Government Conservative”! What’s wrong with having a “Small Government Conservative” become the final GOP pick for POTUS?
The Vice Presidential speculation has begun and here is a possibility that intrigues me greatly.
I like Cantor, I don’t think he’s national candidate potential. However Jewish voters won’t vote for Romney because he has a Jewish VP. Need to stress other issues, like the economy.

Where did that come from? Eric Cantor isn’t in the same catagory as those people.
If the VP isn’t a conservative, I’d say give away the RNC’s money on street corners, and at least you’ll be stimulating the economy with it.
Nominate Whoopi Goldberg. She’d carry the Black and Jewish vote right. Goldberg is Jewish, right? Right?
At least it will take him out of the House so that I don’t have to vote against him.

Sory... wrong thread... but cantor is not someone I like a great deal... my mistaken post explains why. He is not in the league with the others but he is not on any list that I would have for any position. cantor is a leader in the gop/e... I am sorry if that offends you but that is how I see the man.

For VP....I would prefer either Allen West or Marco Rubio!
