WASHINGTON - A study by the Agriculture Department has found that food stamps, one of the country's largest social safety net programs, reduced the poverty rate substantially during the recession. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, reduced the poverty rate nearly 8 percent in 2009, the most recent year included in the study, a significant impact for a social program whose effects often go unnoticed by policymakers. "SNAP plays a crucial, but often underappreciated, role in alleviating poverty," said Stacy Dean, an expert on the program with the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities, a Washington-based research group that focuses on social programs and budget policy.

Terrific! Let’s get EVERYBODY on food stamps and we’ll eliminate poverty once and for all. Why didn’t I think of this sooner?

Just like unemployment stimulates the economy, I’m sure the more people getting food stamps stimulates the economy as well. Imagine how much worse the economy would be if 45,000,000 were not currently getting food stamps.

Not to worry.....

The State-Run-Media will be reporting that Un-Employment is a -2.0% by the time November comes around, and that the Middle Class is doing better than ever IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD!

J"unk Food” & Luxury Items

The Food and Nutrition Act of 2008 (the Act) defines eligible food as any food or food product for home consumption and also includes seeds and plants which produce food for consumption by SNAP households.

The Act precludes the following items from being purchased with SNAP benefits:

alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, hot food and any food sold for on-premises consumption.

Nonfood items such as pet foods, soaps, paper products, medicines and vitamins, household supplies, grooming items, and cosmetics, also are ineligible for purchase with SNAP benefits.

Soft drinks, candy, cookies, snack crackers, and ice cream are food items and are therefore eligible items

Seafood, steak, and bakery cakes are also food items and are therefore eligible items

Since the current definition of food is a specific part of the Act, any change to this definition would require action by a member of Congress. Several times in the history of SNAP, Congress had considered placing limits on the types of food that could be purchased with program benefits. However, they concluded that designating foods as luxury or non-nutritious would be administratively costly and burdensome.

................................

With the current technology, I'm callin BS on this one.

Silly me; I thought being dependent upon others for sustenance was the very definition of poverty. I suppose we can look forward to 0bama doing his best to spread more of his brand of prosperity around.

Wow, a bunch of government bureaucrats did a study and found that government bureaucrats were doing a good job. I would have never guessed the outcome of that study. I’m surprised they didn’t give themselves all a big raise.

Actually, that's true.

Caps to the price of fuel lead to gas lines.

Anyone else remember gas lines?

Subsidies produce surpluses - like our current surplus of poor, worthless losers.

The food stamp program (swiped on the Chinese credit card) is another brilliant entitlement that our grandkids get to pay for.

Isn’t the poverty rate determined as a function of a family’s income? How do food stamps change income? Maybe
disposable income, but that is not what is looked at.

The IL Link card allots a monthly food balance and also a separate cash balance. On the cash side, they can purchase anything they want. As a grocery store employee I watch recipients buy cigarettes, alcohol and wire money via Western Union every day and it makes me SICK!
