Newt Gingrich Issues Statement on Santorum’s Departure, Tells Mike Huckabee He’ll ‘Finally Get to Be 1-on-1 With Romney’
Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich was just on the Mike Huckabee Radio show, and commented on Santorum suspending his own presidential campaign just moments ago. On the show, Gingrich discussed finally getting to be ’1-on-1′ with Romney, how he will campaign going forward, and a possible debate in North Carolina with the current front-runner.
Below are some highlights from Huckabee’s interview with Gingrich:
“I did not get a heads up in advance. We have been talking for two weeks, and I knew this was a real possibility in his mind. I do know that he had begun to realize that when you are up against all of Wall Street, it is very difficult. The money machine makes it difficult to have a competitive race.”
“I am not focused on going after Romney; I want to focus on the issues and Barack Obama. I will admit it was a slugging match in Florida; people who like me don’t want me down in the gutter. We will see what Governor Romney decides. I am going to focus on the Republican platform and why Obama is a grave threat to this country.”
“Our folks are making calls to undecideds and those for Rick [Santorum]; we have been talking to someone in North Carolina, and there may be a debate [...] between Romney and me. I would like to have an open dialogue – just the two of us, a chat.”

As most well know, Progressive is just another name for socialist. To most of us that is flat-out unAmerican.
Let’s see what can be done to help the last remaining conservative in this race.

That’s cute. We support Newt then now and for the rest of the election.
The question is what you hard core Rick people are going to do. Support Newt or endorse Rombot like Rick did in 08.
Darrell, I don’t envy your position.
Would they be most apt to stay a Santorum vote, or to vote for Romney? Will they necessarily be choosing between supporting Romney and supporting Newt?
If it’s Romney v Newt, I’d like them to think about how Santorum was at the Supreme Court when Obamacare was being heard. Santorum was so right about how Romney could not lead the public in the charge against Obamacare because of his own Romneycare. I don’t believe that Romney is as “electable” as the media would have us believe - largely because of Romneycare. That probably explains why Romney could throw so much money into campaigning - outspending his rivals by huge margins - and still not get resounding support even in spite of illegal shenanigans by the Republican establishment and a fawning media. If he can only get a “meh” out of the public even when he’s got everything going his way and a huge financial advantage, why does anybody think he would far better when the media goes after his jugular and the entitlement class is out rioting for Obama? 60-75% of the public opposes Obamacare, and yet we would offer a candidate that can’t exploit that?
And the thing that makes me adamantly against Romney is the fact that he personally decided that Romneycare trumped the already-existing provision allowing for freedom of conscience, so that those who opposed abortion would not be forced to participate in them. There is no reason for ANYBODY to be forced into participating in abortion when they believe it to be murder. There are non-Catholic hospitals that can administer the morning-after pill after a rape, and women can find those hospitals; there is no need to force Mother Theresa to commit what she believes to be murder. That rates right up there with Saddam Hussein executing innocent men in front of their wives and children - and then charging the wife for the bullet.
Those who support Rick Santorum would know he could not support that. If the government can mandate that people violate their own religion, what’s to stop the government from mandating sharia? With the best of intentions, Romney would lay the foundations for sharia. That doesn’t sound like somebody who recognizes who America’s real enemies are, and what their intentions are for America. That’s also something that Santorum knew full well; Santorum knows who our enemies are. I know he would not want to lay the groundwork for those Islamist enemies to be successful here.
Regarding Gingrich’s money situation, if conservatives begin to rise up together as you say - which I am hoping and praying for - perhaps the SuperPac funder will realize there’s a fighting chance against Romney.
Those comments weren’t warranted. They were spiteful.
Like a lot of people here, I was open to both Santorum and Gingrich.
I don’t know why, but some people insist on the circular firing squad.
I’m glad you had the agreement you did. It shows you’re too smart to join the circular firing squad. Your guy had everything in the world to be proud of. I think it was love of country, God, and family that put him in the race, and the same that led him to step out of it. He deserves our respect.
Romney is a coward regardless.

Rush’s guess shows that he knows that Santorum is no conservative, and thus would never be a conservative “team player” that would stick it out to the convention and prevent a Romney disaster, regardless of who was the ultimate conservative candidate.
Santorum was always the establishment’s “other guy.”

My vote is still for Newt..We vote here in Texas next month..From what I hear my friends and family will be voting for Newt.I liked Rick Sanatorium but am voting for Newt..
I pray Newt gets the votes he needs and Romney gets out..I also pray that the Sanatoriums little girl will get well and live a normal life..
The trashing went both ways. I was told I wasn’t a “Christian” because I was voting for Newt.
There were lots of this kind of trashing on both sides.
Now the question is are ya going to vote for Romney? Or are ya going to vote for the only conservative left on the ballot?
You see, I wasn’t happy with Santorum’s people on this site because of the comments made to me but I was going to vote for him if he ended up being the candidate. (anyone but Romney)
So now, it is Santorum’s people that gets to make this decision.
Santorum is still on the ballot in PA. I am voting for him. Right now Newt is running behind Paul here at 5%. If he breaks 20% by election day, I may consider voting for him. As far as I see, Santorum will still come in second here even after suspending the campaign because he is the home town boy. He is the only game in town. Newt has not shown he can win anywhere past GA and SC. He is also broke. No one can show me where he has any real chance of knocking Milt out of one single state that is upcoming. That is why there is so much depression here today now that Rick is out. Milt is effectively the nominee. He has no real challengers left.
Interesting that you are going to vote for Santorum anyway. I always wondered why people still voted for Cain, Perry even after they quit.
I would have voted for Cain, but once he dropped out I looked at the other candidates to support.
I guess I will never understand it.

It’s hard to have hope. Rick dropped out not because Newt beat him but because RINO Romney beat both of them.
Everyone else just wants to get this thing over with to focus on Obama.
Because today, with the loss of Rick, there are no other candidates left. I guess you missed it Sunday on Face the Nation where Newt supported Romney. They are both grandfathers you know. Newt is done. Cain endorsed Romney today for crying out loud. Voting for Santorum now in his home state is more a show of support for the tough fight he fought and a screw you to Milt than anything important.
BTW, Newt is running at 5% here in the Keystone State. He isn't even going to beat Paul here.

This is obviously bad news for those of us who would like to see a unified anti-Romney front. Does anyone have good information on whether Perry and Palin are still backing Gingrich, and how Bachmann is leaning?
We can expect they'll all say they'll back the eventual Republican nominee; to say anything else at this point is political suicide. What counts is what they're saying about pre-convention endorsements. If we get chaos at the convention, we may see national political figures decide to back someone else or withhold their endorsement — just like Mitt Romney's own father did when Goldwater won the nomination — but it's too early to expect things like that today.
I've been on the phone and email most of today with some key “influencers” who, now that Santorum has dropped out, are on the fence about supporting Gingrich or Romney, and doing in-person politicking as well. Let's just say this has been a really bad day for me and a lot of other people I know, and I'm not happy with what I'm hearing.
By focusing on politics for the last week or so, I'm doing some pretty serious damage to my business since I really should be doing other things, but I'm doing it because I truly believe a Romney nomination is a disaster for America. I do not want to say in November, if Obama wins re-election, that I might have been able to make a few more phone calls or answer a few more questions in April and May, but didn't do so when I still had a chance to do something, however small, in my own little sphere of influence and contacts, to stop Romney's nomination.
The stakes really are that high if Romney is the nominee.
As I said to a certain pro-life lawyer today, with Romney the best we can expect is to see more nominees like David Souter or Sandra Day O'Connor. Granted, that's better than Kagan and Sotomayor, but a bad Supreme Court nominee can cause damage for decades down the road.
