Affordable Care Act a leap forward for women
Bakersfield Californian ^ | April 7, 2012 | by Cate Edwards

The Supreme Court is again at the center of a highly controversial policy debate, having just heard arguments for the Affordable Care Act. There's been much discussion about the justices' supposed political agendas. I've heard fear-mongering about government takeovers and rumors of increased business costs.

But I haven't heard much about what's really at stake: the welfare of the American people -- specifically women. Women like my mother and the other mothers, wives, sisters and daughters who need preventive services to ensure that they are healthy.

Our Constitution was created to "promote the general welfare." So a court that strikes down the health care law would not only shirk its constitutional responsibility, it would unduly injure the welfare of American women.

My mother, using everything from blog posts to congressional testimony, challenged this country to translate the Constitution's focus on each American's welfare into health reform.

The Affordable Care Act has done more to expand women's access to health care than any other piece of legislation in more than 50 years. It allows women to make health care choices based solely on what is best. Without this law, women may not get the preventive care, early detection tests or cancer treatments that they need.

And it's not just these women whose lives could be devastated by limited health care. They are mothers, daughters, sisters, wives. Women can now get the health care they need to stay healthy and alive -- for themselves and their families.

That is promoting the general welfare.

These are not issues before the Supreme court.

Depends on who is arguing against it on our side, now doesn't it?

At least Romney COULD say, 'I made a mistake and will rectify it if elected' Obama can't.

This is all about total control of your lives. Obama people who wrote this bill want to cut the population back. You do this with birth control, abortion, and death to older folks.

See it will now be affordable once people drop like flies.

In addition to all of the great comments, the above are worth repeating! Thanks dforest.

This abortionist keeps talking about mothers, sisters, & daughters, people who don’t exist if preventive health care guidelines are followed.

Too bad Cate’s mom didn’t prevent her.

If that had been a report for credit at school, it would have got a D at best. Basically started with a premise and then just repeated the same thing over and over in a different way.

At least Romney COULD say, 'I made a mistake and will rectify it if elected'...

Never happen BEFORE the elections. And Obama will point to it as Romney being on the side of ObamaCare - an argument his media minions will gleefully spread far and wide.

IMHO, we need to push for a brokered convention. Even if it doesn't happen, we need to take the fight, long and hard, to RINO elitists within the Party.

They need to fear us!

"That is promoting the general welfare"

That phrase, as always, has been re-instituted to "PROVIDE the General Welfare".

Whereas the Founders' Intent was to stay out of the way of people living their lives on their own, without intrusion, and for the Government to make sure they didn't stand in the way, people now want EVERYTHING "FREE", as long as OTHERS are forced to pay for it.

I dont care HOW MUCH everyone can have; just don't make ME pay for it, you dumbass.....

Never happen BEFORE the elections.

It would be Romney's only chance in November. Super Deligates will keep a brokered convention from happening.

Every woman in this country has access to 'preventive services' in order to stay healthy. The discussion right now is just who is going to pay for it. The poor in this country have access to healthcare through government assistance already. The people who are being squeezed are those in the middle who find paying $15K a year for their family's health insurance very difficult.

There are many ways to make healthcare more affordable. The abomination known as Obamacare is not one of them.

Obama’s polling showed he had substantially less than a majority of the male vote but still had a majority of women. So they decided to make the election about women.

The “great uniter” just continuing the community organizer tactic of us against them to further his agenda. He has no interest in doing what's best for all Americans or lifting all boats, just his chosen group no matter who has to be made the enemy to achieve his goals.

They talk as if women are more important than men.

Women are more important than men. And ever so many of them know it.

Merchants and the Business Roundtable think so, too. That's why the men you see on TV, in sitcoms and rom-coms and advertisements, are idiots.

(Seen on TV: a show rating a small group of men competitively as diaper-changers.)

I wonder how long ago her phone rang, with a Barry Soetoro staffer or General Secretary Nancy Pelosi on the other end, asking this woman to write this steaming load with its embedded, agenda-compliant attack on the Court. Indeed, it may have been written for her. It's a pretty smooth steaming load, vide the quote.

It smells like the Flukerbot attack on the Catholic Church -- which was Nancy's deal. Get a woman to stand up and be a stiff, a mouthpiece, for the eyes-glow-in-the-dark people in the Administration.
