Katy dad who left kids in van at gun store: 'People make mistakes'

HOUSTON—A father who is accused of leaving his two kids in a car while he shopped at a gun store in Katy told KHOU 11 News he made a mistake, and he wants his kids back.

"I regret it obviously. I feel bad about it. I didn’t do it on purpose. Now, we’re trying to move forward," said Gage Eason.

Eason, 21, and his wife, Hailie Eason, 21, met with KHOU 11 News after a supervised visit with their children Monday morning.

Child Protective Services removed their children, 6-month-old Cameron and 18-month-old Ember, from the Easons' home following what happened inside Tactical Firearms on March 24, 2012.

Cameras from the store’s surveillance system captured Eason looking at guns inside the store for nearly 50 minutes while his two children sat in their car seats in his van in the parking lot.

By time Eason left the store, someone had noticed the children and called 911.

"People make mistakes every day. Mine just happened to be shown on camera. It wasn’t intentional," Eason told KHOU 11 News. "I love my kids and there’s nothing more important than my kids."

Eason said he lost track of time.

"I have a hard time judging time sometimes, and I didn’t feel like I was there for that long, so I was actually shocked I was there for that long," he said.

You don’t leave your kids in the car. You just don’t. Gun store, whatever, doesn’t matter. This guy is an idiot and I’m glad the kids are ok.

I don’t understand why the mom lost custody, too. It seems the kids should have been left with their mother.

How about the parents whose kids DIE from being left in the car? Should people pass on by and not meddle lest they end up decorating a lamp post?

“I know I left my kids in the car but I didn’t think I did”

What?

If it had been a Hallmark Card Store and not a firearms dealer, would Child Protective Services have taken the children? I’m guessing probably not.

They would have been taken regardless of where it happened. No 6 and 18 month old kids should ever be left in a car alone for any period of time.

These parents are idiots.

This is a truly rare situation where the mother is actually married to the father and as husband and wife - they live together with their children.

Can you believe that? In 2012, we still have that kind of family arrangement?

Here in the Kalifornia low desert, you’ll go to jail if you tie your pet up to the outside of your car on a summer day.

That was my first thought too.

If it was hot or sunny out, I could understand the concern. Otherwise...I was left alone in a car longer than that back in the 60s. Guess we were tougher little kids back then!

I assumed that; I just don’t understand why the mom would be deprived of the children, too.

I can understand, in an abuse/neglect situation, where the father might not be allowed to be in sole care of the kids until the facts are determined.

But the mother is not accused of doing anything wrong.

That was my experience also, and for all of the cry-babies & bleeding hearts on this thread, it happened to me in So Cal during warm weather. Didn’t hurt us any. I guess we were tougher back in the 50’s.

I think there are too many meddlers out there nowadays and some of them need to be made an example of so that the others stop sticking their nose into everyone’s business.

Also, the Nazis & Comrades that work for CPS need to be taught a lesson too. What is possibly wrong with issuing a warning? Or does the insane body of laws that have taken away parental rights prevent that?

Think about it.

If they released the children to their mother, they are in effect also releasing them to who?

I bet your mom did not leave you alone in a car when you were 6 months old.

Would you leave your 6 month old grandkid(s) alone in the car for 50 minutes today? I really doubt you would. If you did I bet the parents of your grandchild would rip you a new one.

I have thought about it.

The removal of the kids to foster care is insanely traumatizing to the perfectly innocent children and the perfectly innocent wife.

It seems to me it would be in the best interests of all concerned to somehow restrain the father from sole custody while an investigation is made.

Not to place the kids in foster care.

If my spouse has been alleged to have neglected or abused our children, without my knowledge or consent, I don’t think my kids should be taken from me.

The kids were in their car sets and couldn’t get out— is there any evidence they were endangered by being left in the car at that time? If not, why were they taken?

I am so mad at this guy.

Why didn't he take them kids in there and buy each one of them a pocket knife? Or even a stinking "Don't Tread On Me" sticker? How much can that cost?

At least they could have looked at the pistols. Sheesh. Where does this guy get off? Poor, deprived children. Can't even take a look at the new Ruger 10/22 Takedown.

It just brings tears to the eyes, don't it?

Join me and take a kid to a gun store today. Do it, FRiends.

/sarc. Well, mostly.

I don’t leave my daughter in her carseat while I run into the gas station, let alone shop for an hour. Someone could abduct them. They could overheat. They could have a dirty diaper and be screaming for half an hour needing a change. The car could slip out of gear and roll into traffic.

If I wouldn’t leave my purse in the car I wouldn’t leave my kid either.

Any parent that leaves their babies in the car is an idiot.

The defense “my parents left me in the car all the time” is also ridiculous.

I hate CPS/DCFS with a passion, but there really are some parents that are too stupid to raise children in the modern world.
