Alcohol addiction and declining marketability have sidelined Dennis Rodman and rendered him unable to pay an "unjustified" amount of child support, representatives for the former NBA player said today.

Rodman's manager, Darren Price, told ABCNews.com today that the former Chicago Bulls' rebound star has a "well-documented drinking problem, and all the stress from the divorce and not seeing his kids isn't helping. As people know, it's a daily struggle. He has good days and bad ones and good weeks and bad weeks."

While Rodman isn't in an inpatient treatment program, Prince said, "He does see a counselor from time to time."

The Los Angeles Times reported that Rodman's attorney Linnea Willis said Rodman "is broke and cannot afford any additional fees," in court papers filed today. She also said he is "extremely sick."

The filing came in response to allegations from the attorney for Rodman's third wife, Michelle Rodman, that as of March 1, Rodman owed $808,935 in back child support for the couple's 9- and 10-year-old children and $51,441 in back spousal support. He was previously ordered to pay his ex-wife $50,000 per month for child support.

Willis said in a statement that "even the wealthiest celebrities in the world" would not be ordered to pay $50,000 a month, and while Rodman hasn't been able to make payments of that amount, "it is absolutely untrue that Mr. Rodman failed to pay child or spousal support.

“So some weeks he’s sober and some weeks he’s drunk.”

I’d claim drunken stupor, too, if some left wing, castrated, screeching, falsetto feminist judge claimed I owed my ex $50,000 a week.

I’m not a particular fan of Rodman, but I sure as hell can feel his pain.

$800K for 2 kids? What do they have...solid gold iPods? Summer vacations at the same $10K/night Spanish resort where our Diversity Coordinator-In-Chief vacations?

Thanks for posting, doug. I was driving down M-59 (major east/west rd through Pontiac-Waterford-White Lake) in Waterford, Michigan many years ago with my kids in the car (when he played for the Pistons). My kids and I were excited to see Dennis Rodman as a passenger in the car next to us. We waved and he waved back and had a big smile on his face. I always admired his work on the basketball court. He’s one of my all time basketball favorites. He and Dave Bing (current mayor of Detroit) are in my top 10 all time Piston players.

Best wishes to Dennis Rodman.

I will never understand how pro athletes can spend the money they do.

If earned that money, I would save it forever, fearful of running out.

This is in no way a defense of Dennis Rodman, but the child support/alimony he has been ordered to pay is totally ridiculous.

Child support should only be to help pay for the basic needs of the child. I'm talking $100 a week tops (and if the father has custody, the mother should make a similar payment). I don't care if the contributing parent makes $20,000 a year or $20 million a year. Child support should be all about ensuring the child is provided with basic needs. Of course, if the parent wants to pay more voluntarily, that's their business. I'm only talking about court-ordered child support here.

Don't even get me started on alimony. In my opinion, unless the woman was a housewife all her life (and I'm talking Donna Reed here), she should be out earning her own income after a divorce. The privilege of being a housewife post-divorce should be reserved for those women who actually decided to dedicate their lives to their husbands and rearing their children.

“I could never afford it now.”

I’d bet we could find two chairs there on any Wednesday night. I’ll buy.

I get the green-eyed, long-legged slinky red-heads who cause trouble. The rest are yours. You drive, though.

His largest financial mistake was having children and getting married. He had the ability to keep it all and for lust screwed it away. Anyone that made the kind of money he did should first get a financial adviser and practice birth control because the majority of women that followed him were in it for the money.

I don’t know why I always seem to find a bit of amusement, just a bit, when wealthy athletes or celebutards go broke.

Dennis has tat poisoning. That messes up your mind. And the retouches are awfully expensive.
