Rick Santorum's latest attempt to use a Mitt Romney aide's "Etch-A-Sketch" remark against the Republican front-runner instead gave his rival a chance to fire back on Thursday, after Santorum seemed to say he'd rather see President Obama reelected than send Romney to the White House.
Speaking at an event in Texas, Santorum again made the case that Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom's comments Wednesday on CNN about a "reset" of the campaign if Romney clinched the nomination showed the former Massachusetts governor's efforts to appeal to conservatives were insincere.
"You win by giving people the opportunity to see a different vision for our country, not someone who's just going to be a little different than the person in there," Santorum told a crowd in San Antonio, according to NBC News. "If you're going to be a little different, we might as well stay with what we have instead of taking a risk with what may be the Etch-A-Sketch candidate of the future."

Obviously, he is saying that that is what a lot of voters will be thinking if Romney dances around the issues as the Etch-a-Sketch comment seemed to indicate. Personally, I consider Milt a liberal, and a horrifying nominee. He would be the easiest candidate for the Punk to defeat. But Santorum will be voting for Romney, as will I, if it comes to that, and everyone knows it. OTHERS will not be as willing to vote for someone whom they believe will at best slow the speed of the train wreck.
We know BO will sell America down the river. Romney will support abortion, gun control, taxes, socialized medicine but he isnt an enemy of America.
Thats a real comfort knowing Romney isn’t an ememy of America.
All that stuff about gay marriage, not being for Reagan, Romneycare etc etc are just expression of his love for America?
Agreed. Not sure why people want the primary to stop now and hand it all to Romney. There are a few more states to go.
THis whole thread reminds me of the old CHinese proverb that three men make a tiger.
He is correct though.
You can still support Anybody But Romney for the purpose of denying Romney the needed delegate amount. If there’s a chance no matter how slim that we can still get somebody else completely, that’s enough reason for me to support Santorum. I hate Romney about as much as I hate Obama, and Santorum ain’t all wrong in what he said.
The above are Santorum's words.
I enthusiastically endorse them. He is dead-on right. Bullseye!
Anyone wanting to belong to Liberal Party B instead of Liberal Party A hasn't a clue about what's going on.
It is time for a new party.
It is time for conservatives to recognize the danger to this country posed by the two liberal parties presented to us as our "only" choices.
I have trouble believing points 1 and 2.
1) A capitalist would never sign socialized medicine and cap & trade into law, nor would a capitalist support bailouts. A capitalist would DEFINITELY never advocate adopting the individual mandate on a national level as he did in ‘09.
If Romney sincerely came out his actions, I’d be willing to give him the benefit of the doubt a la Newt because I REALLY want to see Obongo tossed out. But instead of running away from his past, he’s embraced it!
Romney doesn’t get to be a capitalist just because he’s been in business. Jason Altmire, my congresscritter, has business experience too, but he’s no more of a capitalist than any of the other Blue Dog frauds.
2) I don’t believe anybody who supports everything in Point 1 could have any respect for the Constitution.
3) I concede that Romney probably doesn’t subscribe to black liberation theology, so he might be marginally better in that respect. Unlike 1 and 2, he’s at least on the record for flip-flopping on affirmative action.
Unfortunately, #3 alone won’t even come close to saving America. It’s 1 and 2 that are far more important, and there Romney is an utter failure.
You hit the nail on the head. He is unstable. He certainly does not act like a mature adult. Maybe the pressure is too much for him. He is not ready for Prime Time.
He certainly will; if not in ads, the comments will be on repeat by the media.
I don't care how disappointed Santorum is, some opinions are best left unspoken. I'm still on the fence about voting for Romney, but I take serious issue with Santorum making public statements like this; it's childish, and shows a lack of discretion. I didn't think the day would come I would say this, but he needs to get out after Louisiana. I'd rather see Newt, warts and all, continue onward. The odds are against him, just as they are with Santorum, but at least he has the insight to know when to reverse course, or shut his trap.
You enjoying your Obama $5 gas, 5 trillion in debt it piled on us ,illegals it let in etc? you do realize that money has to be paid back so we are living in the matrix now built on debt not reality? Keep campaigning for Obama the more you do the more it makes want to vote against Obama.
sure Oracle. Nobody could be worse than Obama , or what it has done to America.Obama will increase his attacks on America because it knows it wont have to face another election.Obama will destroy the U.S. because it wont be facing reelection.
Santorum is right. If Obama’s liberalism sends us to the brink, then the blame can be placed at the feet of the democrats. But if Romney’s knee jerk liberalism takes us to the same place, the blame will fall on the Republicans and we can expect that the MSM will then blame it all on Conservatives and the sheeple will believe it.
In that sense another 4 years of Obama would be better than 4 years of Romney followed by 16 years of some Democrat Obama clones.
If the Etch-a-sketch candidate gets the nomination. I’m voting 3rd party.
Not always “foolish”, IMHO. I'm persuaded that many of those making the claim are trolls, perhpas sent over to FR by DU to stir up chaos among conservatives.
Therefore, looked at from their point of view, these “troll claimers” are "rational" rather than foolish — whereas from our point of view, the best description should probably be “devious.”
Yes, Santorum is indeed finished. IMHO, the Republican voters should reject him in tomorrow’s Louisiana POTUS primary election. I am sick and tired of posters on this site bad mouthing our candidates, no matter who it is!!! It infuriates me when I read that conservatives would rather see Obama re-elected then Romney, or Gingrich or Santorum, or Paul!!!
Santorum could and should have won the nomination, but....he did the same thing as Gingrich, put his foot in his mouth and both men lost their cool on numeous occasions. Not a good trait for the world’s most powerful leader!!!
Sad, but....true!!!
Me. I would vote for a blind monkey, with one hand tied behind his back, before I would ever vote for the destroyer of America and the American way of life, Barack Hussein Obama, the America hater and his “evil devil” wife Michelle. These two people are truly America’s worst enemies!!!
Who ever the Republican candidate is, I will back him or her, because sitting on your hands, and letting Obama get re-elected is commiting virtual suicide for one’s own life and....more importantly do the same to their children and....American children yet to come!!!
He’s right. A Romney presidency would further dilute the GOP into the party of a more gradual socialist nation. At least if we have a real conservative there will be genuine differences in philosophies as opposed to a debate of scale in policy. As it is right now, most the Rebublicans are the same as Democrats, in they just want to stay in power as opposed to having any solid principles. Romney is the best choice for making that happen.
Anyone who thinks this is not the case needs to look up Alf Landen.
Well stated.
One way Romney would be worse is that all of his supporters will continue to support him when he pull the cr um stuff he pulled in MA at the national level.
Imagine an EO “legalizing” gay marriage nationally? He did it in MA. Permanent ban on normal-sized magazines? He signed it into law in MA. Yet so many Republicans support him anyway.
The same people will resist Omaba’s agenda.
That didnt take long........Fox news just repeated Ricky’s statement, but it started with Rick Santorum wants voters to vote for Obama. Oh well, no matter what, he gave the Obama campaign a great ad. Idiot.
Enlighten me......when did Gingrich “put his foot in his mouth?” I can assure you, Gingrich never said anything this stupid or selfserving.
The anti Mormon posts, imho, are absurd. If you all think Romney is a liberal, why would you think he wants to rule as a conservative Mormon theocrat?
What evidence do you have that, in a long public and private career, Romney has been “less loyal” to the USA than to any entity? When has he put Mormonism above business or politics?
Why would service to your church be a negative here?
Gee, I wonder how much those who fear mormonism really don’t like catholics very much either?
It’s just crazy talk that sounds like it belongs in the 1930’s. Since you all believe Romney is going to repeat his Mass. governorship if he becomes president, was there ever an issue that he did something to favor Mormonism in Mass.?
