Whoa. That’s what we get for laughing at the earthquake predicting thread from this morning. They were two days early.

Apparently it happened in a really remote region, and hopefully the deaths and injuries will be minimal to none.

Felt as far away as Mexico City, apparently.

Expect news media to go wall-to-wall with “is Malia Obama safe!?!?!?!” stories in 3...2...1...

Of course, all-drama-all-the-time CNN is ginning up its coverage by soliciting for iReports, and the breast-beating crowd with its oh-the-humanity chants is warming up off camera while waiting for its cue.

Lots of unreinforced cinder block structures down there so this will be awful.

As much as I dislike Obama, I certainly don't want to see any harm come to his daughter or those other kids who are travelling with her.

(Silver lining: This will bring a lot of media attention to the trip, which the White House has been trying their best to downplay. It will also cause a lot of people to ask why it was necessary to spend all that taxpayer money to send the first daughter and 12 friends down there in the first place.)

That’s a large quake. If it happens in an urban center, it’s big trouble.

In comparison, our 6.8 Nisqually Earthquake from 2001 was 32 miles deep. A 7.6 at 10 miles deep must be brutal.
