Rick Santorum: If I Win The Illinois Primary, I Win The Nomination

By Andrew Rafferty EFFINGHAM, Ill. -- Rick Santorum on Saturday guaranteed that a win in the Illinois primary will result in his nomination as the Republican presidential nominee.

"This is a primary, and turnout is everything. You do your job, you do your job, then this is the pledge," Santorum said. "If we're able to come out of Illinois with a huge or surprise win, I guarantee you, I guarantee you that we will win this nomination."

Illinois has largely been predicted to favor Mitt Romney for Tuesday's primary. The vote is expected to be driven by Chicago and its surrounding suburbs, pegged as unfavorable territory for the former Pennsylvania senator's brand of conservatism. But in areas like Effingham, hours south of the Windy City, Santorum hopes to fire up a Republican base that is often overshadowed by its Democratic counterparts to the north.

"You know you don't get a chance to out-vote your friends up in the Chicago-land area very often, but this is a primary and turnout is everything," he said, standing in a warehouse of a local business specializing in kitchen equipment. While stumping in the Land of Lincoln, Santorum said he feels like he's already running in the general election.

“People ask me why I’m the best candidate to run against Barack Obama," said Santorum. "It’s because I feel like, in many respects, I am running against Barack Obama here in this primary because Mitt Romney has the same positions as Barack Obama in this primary.”

The health care bill that Romney signed as governor of Massachusetts is the issue Santorum has been hammering him on most frequently. Santorum says the legislation laid the groundwork for the health care bill Obama signed in 2010....

...if so, you will vote in President Obama and the completed destruction of America with no turning back.

I will fight until my last breath for freedom even if I need to vote for Romney in a last ditch effort.

I will hope that either Newt or Santorum will be our choice but if it comes to Romney, he is a notch above Obama and I won't let my pride and hurt stand in the way.

Wake up Freepers. I cannot believe that we are acting like MoveOn.org

We are above all this...

I know for a FACT that I am not that dumb, it's all those other ignorant souls who jumped into Santorum with both feet, fully blindfolded! (The only way to illustrate it)

Now, we are stuck with the result from which we tried to warn them, would happen.

Well, I’ll know who to blame if we have four more.

And I’m just mean enough to hope you feel the pain a lot.

Even if Rick Santorum wins the popular vote, he can’t win the separate vote for convention delegeates.

54 slots in 18 congressional districts are up (2 in some, 3 in most, 4 in some)

Santorum is only running one delegate candidate at most in each district.

Romney will win I would guess 40 of the 54 delegate slots anyway by default regardless of how well Santorum does in the popular vote.

The Newtered supporters show their desperation on every Santorum thread. They cannot prop up a deadbeat candidate, so they attack the only conservative alternative to another 4 years of Obummer. If O’Jackass has another 4 years, no one should ever fail to remind them who helped greatly in that endeavor.

It is also equally insane to promote the candidate who not only said single payer government-mandated healthcare was a good idea, promoted it with Hitlery Clinton, and became a paid lobbyist for the drug companies who were pushing for it.

[The Newtered supporters show their desperation on every Santorum thread. ]

Statements like that are sure to enhance the desire of Newt supporters to give Ricky the shiv. I wonder what goes through Santorum supportes minds when they give this holier than thou, our way or the highway speech?

They come at you like a disturbed hornets’ nest refusing to concede that not only is Newt utterly unelectable, he’s burned toast at this stage and is playing the role of spoiler.

So, what specifically are you telling me?

I am telling you that he has had long history of legislative leadership.

You seem to be insisting that the requirement is his name on legislation. I'm pointing out that due to his position he was involved in just about every bit of successful legislation that occurred between 2000 and 2007, further he would have been involved in stopping legislation as well.

Being as how Dubya and Denny Hasert were not the most conservative guys ever to hold office in Washington, there is a downside to that record, but to say he did not exhibit leadership is silly.

Name the bills or laws with Gingrich's name on them. Are you going to say the lack of them means Gingrich wasn't a leader?

Please, .... help me understand the man beyond contraception and porn.

Club for Growth describes him as "above average" on issues not relating to contraception and porn.

To: Nextrush

Let me correct my earlier post since I’ve dug deeper into the situation.

Romney, Paul and Gingrich all have full 54 candidate slates for convention delegates running in the separate delegate election Tuesday in Illinois.

Santorum does have more candidates than I originally thought, but he is still short of a full slate.

Santorum has 44 candidates for the 54 slots with no candidates in Congressional Districts 4,5,7 and 13.

He will have a harder time than Romney winning delegates on Tuesday night.

Of course you will, we all will. But if that happens, I will gladly jump on a viable 3rd party choice if one is available, like Gingrich/Palin.

But Santorum’s ridiculous declaration, that if he wins Illinois, “IT'S OVER BABY! I WON!” kind of stupidity, is typical of his whole campaign. He has been winging it from the very start and he will be winging it if he wins the nomination. Why in the World, would we want to replace one inexperienced Senator, with another inexperienced Senator? There is no logic in that fact at all.

I'm not sure what you mean by that one. As for me, if the GOP were to nominate Bernie Madoff I'd crawl over glass to vote for him. I'm going to do what I can to fire Barack Obama

Why in the World, would we want to replace one inexperienced Senator, with another inexperienced Senator? There is no logic in that fact at all.

Leaving aside the point that you cannot call a two-term senator inexperienced while you must call a 1/3 term senator that, the logic is to fire Barack Obama.

Pretend he's a football coach who ends three seasons in a row with 1-15 records. You do not renew his contract. Maybe you aren't real happy with what's available to replace him, but you do pick one and replace him.

And if the replacement screws up, you replace him when his contract ends.

I'm sick and tired of worshipping politicians.

OK, I think I got what you meant.

I'm suspicious of third-party campaigns, but, yeah if a conservative one pops up and gets some steam and looks like it has a chance, I'll vote for it.

It's one of those things, though, that one better count the cost real hard and double check it twice before signing on.

And remember if one does pop up, it might be Obama surrogates behind it.

I am telling you that he has had long history of legislative leadership.

I'm asking you to educate me. I can't find any bills authored by Santorum and passed in the Senate. I'm hoping I've missed them. I'm not asking what he voted on while in the Senate, that was his job and good for him for doing it. But that's not leadership.

So rather than belittle my request, why not just tell me what his long history of legislative leadership is...a few examples would really help me.

Thanks.

I'm asking you to educate me.

Looks a pretty hopeless task.

OK, one more time: is it the job of the legislative leadership to sponsor or co-sponsor bills?

Are you for Gingrich? What bills did he sponsor as House Speaker that were enacted into law? Here's a helpful link. Now, go do some research and get back to us.

BTW, Gingrich was a very good congressional leader. Much better than Hasert or Boehner.
