Rick Santorum: If I Win The Illinois Primary, I Win The Nomination

By Andrew Rafferty EFFINGHAM, Ill. -- Rick Santorum on Saturday guaranteed that a win in the Illinois primary will result in his nomination as the Republican presidential nominee.

"This is a primary, and turnout is everything. You do your job, you do your job, then this is the pledge," Santorum said. "If we're able to come out of Illinois with a huge or surprise win, I guarantee you, I guarantee you that we will win this nomination."

Illinois has largely been predicted to favor Mitt Romney for Tuesday's primary. The vote is expected to be driven by Chicago and its surrounding suburbs, pegged as unfavorable territory for the former Pennsylvania senator's brand of conservatism. But in areas like Effingham, hours south of the Windy City, Santorum hopes to fire up a Republican base that is often overshadowed by its Democratic counterparts to the north.

"You know you don't get a chance to out-vote your friends up in the Chicago-land area very often, but this is a primary and turnout is everything," he said, standing in a warehouse of a local business specializing in kitchen equipment. While stumping in the Land of Lincoln, Santorum said he feels like he's already running in the general election.

“People ask me why I’m the best candidate to run against Barack Obama," said Santorum. "It’s because I feel like, in many respects, I am running against Barack Obama here in this primary because Mitt Romney has the same positions as Barack Obama in this primary.”

The health care bill that Romney signed as governor of Massachusetts is the issue Santorum has been hammering him on most frequently. Santorum says the legislation laid the groundwork for the health care bill Obama signed in 2010....

When Newt came to speak here in 3 different L.A. locations, it was never reported in the local media. Obviously the LA SLIMES will never cover the GOp either which is understandable. Most conservatives who are politically-charged that I know of here in the L.A. area did not even know Newt was in town until we all looked at FR and it was too late..

Obviously you never read Andrew Malcolm's blog when he worked at the LA Slimes.

I don’t think he’ll get to the point of promising “permanent lunar-based colonies within eight years.”

I guess you don't remember, but there was a time when a America wasn't afraid to set big goals --- and reach them. It's a commentary on how far we've fallen that now we ridcule them.

Really quite sad.

That makes no sense.

For example, Santorum has said he would enforce obsenity laws, a move which is a direct offense to the marxists and their ongoing efforts to destroy our country.

Rick Santorum is the best thing that could happen to the GOP, the USA and the world, right now.

Romney, Paul and to a lesser extent Gingrich, are what would be insanity.

"We won’t get the economy going again by replacing one senator with no job creating experience with another with no job creating experience.”

My preference is Newt but Romney comparing Santorum to Obama is either a meaningless off-the-cuff sound bite or a sign of desperation.

Obama was a no-show member of the Illinois legislature and a half-term senator when he got the job as President.

Santorum has a long history of legislative leadership, and if the subject is job creation he can always respond that he was the one who wrote welfare reform which did create jobs.

(Santorum) has a long history of legislative leadership,...

This is the first time I've seen this statement. (I may have missed it before.)

Anyway, I've been trying to find what Santorum has led during his Senate tenure. What bills did he author? Were they passed?

Really not trying to be difficult here. I really do want to know.

Thanks very much.

Supporting RINO ROMNEY openly on FR openly and publicly should earn the poster immediate suspension or banishment from Free Republic. Coming out either now, or after Gingrich suspends his campaign, either way. Anti-thetical to the essence of Free Republic.

Believe it or not there are a lot of very good real, true conservatives or are for Mitt. I'm not afraid to debate them. Honest people should never be driven off.

The problem is the trolls but they are not going to out themselves as Mitt supporters. They are going to come here, pretend to be for Newt or Santo and then spend their time ripping down the other guy without saying anything constructive about the one they claim to support.

Anyway, I've been trying to find what Santorum has led during his Senate tenure.

He was the Republican Conference Chairman for six-years which would have been the third-ranking position as the Pubs were in the majority

What bills did he author? Were they passed?

He deserves a lot of credit for welfare reform while serving in both houses as even the Washington Post reluctantly admits.

I'm not sure as to what bills had his name on them.

So, what specifically are you telling me? I don’t care that he was the Republican Conference Chair.....what leadership did he exhibit vis-a-vis spending cuts, jobs, national defense, judges. He was in the Senate for YEARS. Where’s his fingerprint?

Please, .... help me understand the man beyond contraception and porn.

I’m begging you.

Thanks.

Santorum has authored none of the bills he takes credit for.

His record is greatly embellished by his campaign. And his “leadership” is also exaggerated. He takes other people's ideas and runs with them as if they were his own.

An example of that is his "committee" experience. He makes it look and sound like he was in charge, making all the executive decisions and directing the outcomes, when in reality, he was only part of a group.

I have done the research on him. He is nothing but average to moderate, in comparison to his colleagues and he is definitely nothing special. Even Lindsay Graham has a higher Lifetime conservative rating.

Sadly these comments seem very true:

"The flip-flopping Massachusetts liberal has had a MASSIVE and vile attack campaign aimed at Santorum in Illinois. I can only hope that anyone who has gotten the barrage of daily robo hate calls has been turned off by the source of them."
---------------------------------------
Sort of like what is going on here at Free Republic.

you must remember that there's a sizable contingent of closet abortion/sodomy huggers here on FR who hate Santorum every bit as much as the left does.

"I’ll crawl over hard dirt to vote for Romney or anyone else who is our candidate and I pray that the stupidity expressed by some here is not universal."

Not I. (and many others). Romney shouldn't even be running on the GOP side. If Romney is the GOP's Nominee, it will be a slam-dunk 4 more.
