Lawmakers Consider Digital Download Tax (CT)

A public hearing about the proposed tax will be held Friday morning.

Downloading music, movies, e-books and Apps could soon cost Connecticut residents more as lawmakers consider a tax on digital downloads.

The bill, proposed by the General Assembly's Finance, Review and Bonding Committee, would have consumers pay the 6.35% sales tax on any electronic transfer.

Supporters say the bill would level the playing field for brick-and-mortar retailers in the state who are already required to charge Connecticut sales tax to consumers who purchase these products in their stores.

About 25 states around the country have already begun taxing digital downloads.

The Committee will hold a public hearing about the proposed bill Friday morning at 10am at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford

If any product is ripe for black-market trading, it would be digital downloads.

Our leaders are creating a nation of criminals.

Aftermarket sales cannot be successfully taxed.
However, it can be used as a criminal charge if the government needs some excuse to put you in the pokey............

Taxman

The Beatles

Let me tell you how it will be
There’s one for you, nineteen for me
‘Cause I’m the taxman, yeah, I’m the taxman

Should five per cent appear too small
Be thankful I don’t take it all
‘Cause I’m the taxman, yeah I’m the taxman

If you drive a car, I’ll tax the street,
If you try to sit, I’ll tax your seat.
If you get too cold I’ll tax the heat,
If you take a walk, I’ll tax your feet.

Don’t ask me what I want it for
If you don’t want to pay some more
‘Cause I’m the taxman, yeah, I’m the taxman

Now my advice for those who die
Declare the pennies on your eyes
‘Cause I’m the taxman, yeah, I’m the taxman
And you’re working for no one but me.

They charge taxes based on what you said your address is (and may back that up with your credit card's billing address). Ohio already has that tax, so every 99¢ iTunes purchase hits my card for $1.06.

Strangely, I mad three purchases recently on an Android tablet and only one was taxed. I don't know why. Maybe Google is only acting as the payment processor and the final seller is the one that has to determine whether something is taxed.

If you think torrents are popular now, just wait.

Everything that is down-loadable will be in a ‘tor’ file.

How thoroughly delusional!

The old Monty Python’s Flying Circus used to have some great comedy bits about this sort of stuff. The Brits were running out of other people’s money and desperately thrashing about for stuff to tax way back in 1970.

BILLY PRESTON
“Nothing From Nothing”
(Billy Preston and Bruce Fisher)

Nothin’ from nothin’ leaves nothin’
You gotta have somethin’
If you wanna be with me
Nothin’ from nothin’ leaves nothin’
You gotta have somethin’
If you wanna be with me

I’m not tryin’ to be your hero
‘Cause that zero is too cold for me, Brrr
I’m not tryin’ to be your highness
‘Cause that minus is too low to see, yeah

Nothin’ from nothin’ leaves nothin’
And I’m not stuffin’
Believe you me
Don’t you remember I told ya
I’m a soldier in the war on poverty, yeah
Yes, I am

[Instrumental Interlude]

Nothin’ from nothin’ leaves nothin’
You gotta have somethin’
If you wanna be with me
Nothin’ from nothin’ leaves nothin’
You gotta have somethin’
If you wanna be with me

You gotta have somethin’
If you wanna be with me
You gotta bring me somethin’ girl
If you wanna be with me

If it moves, tax it......

And, of course, the corollary...

if it doesn't move, also tax it.

"ct will soon tax your imagination."

Thus exempting much of the electorate and a good part of the legislature from any tax consequences
