BOIS DARC, Mo. -- An elderly cattle rancher recently came face-to-face with three thieves on his property, and he took the matter into his own hands. The thieves might have been arrested if Vance West had been able to get someone to help him.
Vance West, 92, is a veteran and father of three. He lives by himself outside Bois d'Arc on more than 100 acres.
See, there's where they left, he told a reporter, pointing out tire tracks. They will be back. I think they will be back.
West says three men stole nearly $3,000 worth of equipment from one of his sheds. He missed the first time they came around, but not the second.
He started climbing over the gate, and I told him not to climb over. He climbed over anyway, so I pulled a gun on him, West said.
I told him, Do you see where it's cocked? He says, I can see, West said. He was sassy. He told me he wasn't going to do it.
The men got away when West tried to flag down someone on his county road.
It's cases like this that recently caused Greene County Sheriff Jim Arnott to create a temporary task force to investigate a rash of burglaries in rural areas of the county.
It was a short term project but we feel it was very successful, said Arnott.
Anott says, since January, two dozen people were arrested thanks to the campaign.
The reason why I couldn't continue this, because I was asked, Can you keep this going? is there are areas of work that were neglected while they were on special assignment, Arnott said. Just because of manpower, I can't do it all the time.

Thumbs up to gramps!
I would think the sheriff can roll up these mutts fairly quickly.
Hello Mr. Thief;
Now you know my face, and the fact that I won’t shoot you without engaging in a nice conversation first. So sorry you got away.
Why, I’m sure a nice fellow like you wouldn’t think of simply watching out for me, and killing me on sight - before robbing what remains of my possessions when you come back. Heck, I’m sure you won’t track me down and kill me; because there is a chance I might recognize you and act as a witness to your activities. I’m sure you won’t set fire to my house and kill me and my family “just in case”. Why, that would be downright ‘criminal’ of you.
-— Me, I sit quietly in the shadows, quietly pull my hammer back, slide off the safety - take easy aim and you won’t know I’m in the shadows until the muzzle-flash gives me away. 3 quick shots, 1 to the head, 2 center-mass of the torso. Then, I will quietly move to see if there are any more targets that present themselves, deserving of my attention. No worries, I have a clip with enough attention to go around. There will only be one story to tell the police, when they get around to swinging by, and that will be my version.
And the sheriff turns it into an ad for more taxes. How unusual LOL. “I’m not doing my job because I need more money.” I’ve actually had employees say that.
If he’s out in the boon docks, probably can’t get a signal...Just needs to shoot the sorry bastards...
.
Your way is the right way.
Shoot, Shovel, Shut up.
Let's consider the choices -
A 38¢ rifle cartridge or a ½ % sales tax for the rest of eternity.
Poor old guy. He shouldn't have to deal with this in his 90s. If I were nearby, I think I'd go over there and offer to help him guard his property.
BTW, is Missouri a castle doctrine state and do castle doctrine rules apply to someone who isn't necessarily guarding his own castle but someone else's?
A 38¢ rifle cartridge or a ½ % sales tax for the rest of eternity.
A 38 cent rifle cartridge, no waiting period.
A ½ % sales tax for the rest of eternity will cut the average waiting period to 27 minutes down from 30 minutes.
at 92 shoveling is hard work..so could we call it shoot, leave it to the buzzards and shut up. :O)
I know how to pronounce Cairo, Cuba and New Madrid. Gravois Road is “gravoy”. I am wondering how they pronounce Bois d’arc, MO. I am guessing it is “boys dark”. Anyone know?
The “bugler” climbed over the gate after the old man told him not to.
He’d have been assaulted for sure if he weren’t armed. At 92, even a simple punch in the face could be fatal.
It doesn’t really matter where you are in Missouri. If life or limb is in danger, you have no duty to retreat wherever you lawfully are.
This also applies to a 3rd party that you are trying to help - you can justifiably shoot to save someone else.
When one pulls a gun, the time for chit-chat should be over. You are either in danger, or you’re not.
The Bo is like Bow & Arrow, not like Boo to scare someone. Dark as in the dark, no light.
Thanks. I love Missouri. That is good stuff.

Thank you. I had never heard that one said before. Do you know how to properly pronounce the St. Francois River? For bonus points, try the Cuivre River.
