(Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is laying it on as thick as a syrupy Southern drawl as he tries to court the South, a region that has been unkind to him in the past and may soon turn its back on him again.
"Morning, y'all," Romney told a campaign rally on Friday in Jackson, Mississippi. "I got started this morning right with a biscuit and some cheesy grits," he joked.
The former Massachusetts governor is admittedly the underdog in Mississippi and Alabama, two stalwarts of the Old South where Republicans vote in primaries on Tuesday to decide which candidate they think should challenge Democratic President Barack Obama in the November 6 election.

"I realize it's a bit of an away game," Romney told Birmingham radio state WAPI on Thursday, referring to his chances in the South.
His troubles in the South reflect lingering suspicions about the depth of his conservative views. As a former governor of a heavily Democratic state he is seen as more of a moderate.

It is so offensive to have an outsider come in and try aping the lingo to show they fit in.
Kind of like the time a bigwig from the L.A. Dept of Water came up here to rural Nor Cal dressed in what he thought was a cowboy suit using a fake Western drawl while giving us a speech on water rights.
Jack@ss! Man, I am so sick of politicians - how do these people live such disgusting and fake lives, I’ll never understand.
Can you imagine what it would be like if some real Southerner tried to campaign in New England with a faked Bostonian accent??

Just say “Ahr pahrked mahr cahr”
See how easy that is
How your nose till youre more fruent...
Bostonian 101
make that
Hold your nose till youre more fluent
Im voting for the deer..
But then, that about sums up Mittens. Southerners don't hanker to Yankee phony baloney.
Speaking of phony: Fox is still showing over and over the so called 3 way debate of last week. The man crying over his son, and ROMENY getting to opportunity to show just how caring he is. Made me sick. I say that was a SET UP deluxe, and giving Romney plenty of air time (sympathy vote), look how caring he is, boo hoo.
That man never mentioned anything like this for NEWT to respond. Only Romney and Santorum. With NEWT he was very composed.
Huckabee that was a very phony set up for your guys.
And then we do say "Yes mammm, No, mammmm", "Thank ya mammm" very well and everyone is EXPECTED to use it.
Does Mitt use YUSE (same meaning as You All) or yusens when in PA or up north?
Didn’t Y’all know he was from the South? South Boston!
Pray for America
Yup, you can get acceptance in the South by saying “y’all” all the time. It’s easy, and a surefire winner.
I really dislike the affectations of candidates. Obama, the Clintons, Kerry ... just speak like you'd normally speak!
OMG, ROTFL! This idiot IS John Kerry! He’s such an embarrassment, I almost feel sorry for him.
Almost. :)
I just want to slap some sense into him...repeatedly for a very long time.
I'm going to have to check that one out, just for curiosity's sake.
You know, I've never understood why actors and actresses seem to be able to manage any accent well, except for a Southern one. They almost always get it wrong (and the WORST is when they use "y'all" to address one person). Incidentally, the actors on "The Walking Dead" all do a wonderful job of speaking Southern----and two of them are British!
Right out of Toy Story. Not Herman of course.
I got really scared looking at those pics; I was afraid I was going to scroll down and see one of Willard in a cowboy hat. I’m very thankful that didn’t happen, LOL.
Almost had a head rush thinking about it, LOL.
I inwardly cringe when someone tries to imitate our speech. I think to myself: "Has this person ever heard a Southerner speak, including me?"
I didn't look too close but I don't think it wuz beggin fer money like ALL the others do. Strange...
I promise you. This film has the worst attempt at a Southern accent ever committed on film, bar none. And, it’s done by the leading lady. It was entirely stupefying. I’d almost hold my breath in horror every time I’d see this actress about to speak a line.
Terrible movie, to boot. A little cheapo, ‘independent,’ poverty-row film, from the Depression era. Not something that ever would come on television, but bootleg copies are common among collectors. But don’t doubt me for a moment. It’s the WORST attempt at a Southern accent ever.
Oh, you really have my curiosity up now.
