Newt Gingrich is canceling campaign events scheduled for Kansas at the end of the week to shore up support in the Deep South. The former House speaker plans to pour his time and resources into Alabama and Mississippi.
Everything between Spartanburg all the way to Texas, those all need to go for Gingrich, said campaign spokesman R.C. Hammond.
The candidates bus, his rallies and campaign events will be trained on a southern strategy...
Campaign aides also brushed off suggestions by supporters of Rick Santorum that Gingrich drop out...
All of the logic being used by the Santorum campaign is simply reversed and it could be used on Rick Santorum, Hammond said. Well argue, Santorum is splitting Mitt Romneys moderate vote.
The GOP primary will go on for many more months, Hammond said. Well stick in the race.
In a radio interview Wednesday morning, Gingrich himself made clear that he has no plans to get out of the Republican primary, allowing Santorum to face Romney in a head-to-head match up.
If I thought he was a slam dunk to beat Romney and to beat Obama, I would really consider getting out. I dont, Gingrich said on Bill Bennetts Morning in America radio show Wednesday. I think each of the three candidates has strengths and weaknesses and that this is a very healthy vetting process.
Gingrich described himself as a tortoise moving slowly but steadily toward the nomination as he hailed his victory in Georgia on Super Tuesday.
Gingrich was greeted in Montgomery by an enthusiastic crowd in the downtown Renaissance Hotel, where a banner hung reading Promise of a Newt Day. ...
Gingrich looks at the Republican strongholds of Alabama and Mississippi as Gingrich country places where you can sniff out what a conservative is, Hammond said.

Absolutely true. I am terrified of the possibility that Rick Santorum could be POTUS. He has absolutely no leadership experience, he is a follower not a leader. His thought process is elementary and lacks any originality. He seems intimidated when interviewed. He would buckle in a crisis. I know I will be bruised, but since he and Romney both have issues of “selling out,” I will take Romney because of his business experience and leadership. Keep in mind, I am Newt all the way, I am from Ohio, already voted. But if my choice was Romney or Santorum........sorry.
Well, can’t say that I don’t empathize with you- I felt the same way after rick lost big in NH,SC, Fla and Nev- and refused to honorably drop out in favor of the conservative frontrunner.
Santo absolutely puts me to sleep - VERY BORING! I know he effects MANY of the GOP activists (that I know) in CA the same way.
Reaction against Haley Barbour could tilt MS to Santorum, but I don’t know. I believe one of the Barbours is for Romney.
Newt could campaign in AL and MS on how he convinced Reagan to sign King Day into law. He could leave out the part about being for Nelson A. Rockefeller in 1968.
Yeah, I'm a single issue voter, my issue is "anyone but the socialist Mittens" in the primary!
The damage has been done to the GOP already and Mittens as the party choice this time around would be the final nail in the coffin of the "conservative" party.
I disagree. They’ll split the vote and allow Romney to take some of the winner take all states, which will make Romney a lock. They need to meet privately and decide who remains as the Presidential candidate and who will be the VP. Both sides are making good points but as long as this Mexican stand-off continues, the only winner will be Romney.
Chuck Norris came with Huckabee to TN and Huckabee won here...
Newt should have been in TN early BEFORE early voting started on Feb 15...
I didnt even get a yard sign till last week..
When early was almost over...
Of the early voting in my county...4500+ voted way down from 2008
about 2500 went to Rick, 1500 went to Romney, 941 for Newt a few for Ron Paul...
of course Romney started his ugly phone calls early too..
but he was dissing Rick and not Newt...
Opening the campaign offices here earlier than last week would have helped lot too...
It was WAY too early then, as future races have borne out. NOW, remaining in the race makes Newt seem small. The die has been cast, and deep down Newt knows it. It’s over, and I want to see ONE fearless candidate put pressure on Mitt right through August. Mitt can’t be trusted.
Aside from Ga, Newt had a HORRIBLE Super Tuesday.
I care 0.000 about the candidates personal lives. I will start worrying about that when Liberals start worrying about the personal lives of people like Bill BJ Clinton and Barney Frank. What does bother me is the liberal lite records of Romney and Santorum.
Also it bothers me that one of the candidates follows a man made cult religion that tells him that he is a god. Our current WH occupant already thinks he is a god. Do we want more of this? I think not.
So I am disregarding all personal baggage and focusing on who can lead. I have no first hand knowledge of Romney or Santorum leading anything. I do have first hand knowledge of what Newt Gingrich accomplished as Speaker of the House and it is damned impressive. I firmly believe that Newt is the the man that this nation needs to lead us back to our full potential. He gets my vote.
LLS
Then, your guy should have no trouble defeating him.
There’s no way that Santorum can beat BO in the debates.
Go Newt.
It is downright silly to call Rick “liberal lite”. Point to ONE liberal who endorses Santorum based upon his record in Congress. NO ONE on this site can name a single one. People are too easily BS’d by Romney’s millions of negative ads, including scores of folks here.
Rick is tough and fearless one on one, and he would scare the crap out of the Communist in a debate, and make a fool and liar out of him.
My prediction: There will either be NO debates, or ONE short one. Bob
You are obviously in love. <B
Newt’s 15-20% of the votes in most states would put Rick in the victory column. Many Newt voters still don’t get the big picture, and that picture glaringly shows that Newt is toast. Everyone here knows it. Bob
I for one am not anti-Rick. I am Pro-Newt.
With Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and California to go? Get back to me, please, after that.
