Rick Santorum indicated that Newt Gingrich should drop out of the presidential race, arguing -- as Gingrich did during his surge -- that splitting the "anti-Romney" vote helped Mitt Romney win the Michigan primary and Washington caucuses and contributes to his overall success so far.
"It's always harder when you've got to conservative running in the race as we have seen in Washington and we've seen in other states," Santorum said on Fox News Sunday. "We have the anti-Romney vote, if you will. Both Gingrich and I are slugging away."
Santorum stopped short of calling for Gingrich to exit the race, but he noted that their combined support would defeat Romney. "In Michigan, we would have won easily if those two votes had been combined," he told Chris Wallace.
He also made clear that he believes Gingrich will have to drop out, eventually. "And, you know, eventually hopefully the race will settle out and we'll go one on one," Santorum said. "And once that happens, we feel very comfortable we're going to win this thing."

I’d take combat over quakes any day!
Someone shooting at you can be dealt with, but the ground dancing freaks me out!
Glad you are OK!
If you have such confidence in Newt, why do you continually feel the need to tear other candidates down. You’re not doing Newt any favors because you’re eventually going to turn Santorum supporters totally off Newt.
He sucks!
An insane megalomaniac using Romney backers money to finance his delusional fantasy of becoming POTUS
Sweater vest needs to get a real job, like working as a lawyer for pro wrestling like he used to.
It might be good for a laugh if the media went after Newt for his religion but I would hate it every bit as much as when they go after Rick.
Especially since they never go after Romney. How much do we know about Mormons. Personally, I’m ignorant as hell on it. So if these media types really wanted to shed some light on the candidate’s faith as part of the campaign, ask Mitt.
Of course they have no right to define campaign issues like they do, especially about personal matters including faith.
The bluebloods and country clubbers over at the RNC and their creepy pulled back wives are going down!.
The Republican Party never did anything worthwhile, and has the blood of this Republic on its hands dating back to 1861.
This will be the final nail.
If you love Newt as much as you say then you should work day and night for his campaign, send him money, tell your friends how wonderful he is.
You shouldn’t tear down other Republicans and make baseless allegations. You’re not helping Newt with that trash, you’re hurting him.
>> A lot of good FRs Newt-love did us.
Nonsense. It’s the infatuation with Santorum that disrupted Newt’s lead.
I’m an independent, right-wing mofo who hates liberals and Odumbo and never cared much about the GOP. Just waiting for the drama at the convention..
Whiny Santorum at it again.
Newt Gingrich does not alienate:
- The Tea Party
- Libertarians
- Protestants, for pity sake!
- Your fellow Catholics whom you embarrass.
Get off the stage and quit screwing things up for all of us.
Whiny, holier-than-thou Saintorum at it again.
I am praying for Rick’s health.
It’s been a horrible flu and pneumonia season.
God, please protect and strengthen Rick Santorum, Your prolife warrior. Amen.
Gingrich should have taken the honorable course that Pawlenty, Bachman, Cain, and Perry did and withdrawn after Santorum’s romp in winning the Trifecta. His presence is causing a split in the conservative vote and Romney is shooting through the breach. Had Gingrich dropped out, Santorum would have won in MI and the Romney candidacy would have been up in flames. Gingrich is now playing the role of “spoiler” and so we get Romney. Romney needs Gingrich’s role as spoiler. Romney knows this. The $64,000 question is why doesn’t Gingrich and his supporters know about it?
I voted for Newthere in Florida and I am amazed at what I see here. So many people have been -pretending- they are against Romney hi-jacking the nomination. That is what some of these comments prove.
The notion that they would vote for ROMNRY before Santorum is quite absurd.
BOTH of these consevratives, Newt and Rick have some compromises that embarass them. But looking at the body of their work over the decades they spent fighting for the conservative cause confirm their worthiness.
But people who CLAIM to be such purists - if they were to be taken seriously - have no business voting for ANY of the remaining candidates based upon the pretenses they make here.
Newt, whom I voted for, has some issues he supported and still has not denounced - cheifly- his position on global warming and amnesty.
Sorry people, you deserve EXACTLY what you get if you are so foolish as to say you would vote for ROMNEY under ANY circumstance, especially when given the choice of Rick Santorum.
It bespeaks of ignorance, delusions and the type of man crushes to which Romney voters are incapable of being broken.
bump
So what? The bottom line is if it wasn’t for Newt’s 6%, Santorum would have beaten Romney in Michigan. Winning Michigan has been great for the Romney spin machine in the MSM.
The double standard here is getting ridiculous. Gingrich essentially said the same thing when he was in the lead. Everyone applauded him and jeered Santorum when he said it.

In fact, since Santorum was lower in the polls at that point, people continued to yell for him to drop out and accuse him of being a closet Romney supporter whose job was to split the vote so Romney could get the nomination. Now Newt is lower in the polls and has lost to Santorum in multiple states, yet there are no such accusations toward Newt. No one is accusing him of being a closet Romney suppporter. No one is calling for him to drop out. In fact, despite the fact Santorum has a shot at knocking Romney out in Ohio, Tennessee, and Oklahoma, people are still saying that Santorum is in the way of Newt. They say Newt is the only one who can beat Romney. Lately, Newt can’t beat Santorum! The hypocrisy here is outstanding.
It’s not a double standard because Rick Santorum stinks as a candidate and Newt Gingrich is an immense, very seasoned talent.
There is one of the above who not only knows what’s going on, but tells it like it is, at least to a degree.
Now Newt is lower in the polls and has lost to Santorum in multiple states, yet there are no such accusations toward Newt. No one is accusing him of being a closet Romney suppporter. No one is calling for him to drop out.
***Well, I am. He said that Santorum should have dropped out when he beat Santorum in North Carolina. So Newt should just take his own advice and drop out.
