WASHINGTON (AP) -- Newt Gingrich says he has no doubts that the Republican presidential candidates who fall short of winning the nomination will unite behind the eventual nominee - despite the often tough rhetoric the contenders are throwing at each other during the campaign.

Who might the GOP lose if their guy is not the nominee?

Does anybody-but-Obama trump all?

GOP will unite—

GOP perhaps; but not conservatives if it’s Romney.

Exactly!

The GOP establishment has already placed themselves behind Romney in an effort to show how severe they are.

"GOP perhaps; but not conservatives if it’s Romney."

Honestly I don't believe that will happen to a great extent.

While passions are high now and there's plenty of hurt feelings to go around (let me testify!), I don't see many conservatives deliberately handing the election to Obama. Sure, some will stay home and some will vote only down ticket or write somebody in...but most will dutifully pull that GOP lever no matter the name next to it.

You are exactly right. The GOP does not speak for Conservatives.

I will not support Romney. If voters reject the only candidate with solid solutions, Newt Gingrich, then we will all have to suffer the consequences of their folly.

I will not, however, be told that I have to accept and vote for Mitt Romney. I don’t see a lot of difference between him and the current disaster in the White House.

I’m sorry, but if the GOP Nominee is Mitt “Progressive Liberal” Romney there will be uniting.

Maybe uniting around a third party candidate, but principled conservatives will not be voting for Mitt Romney

I agree with your statement, M — but to Newt’s point, that’s not uniting behind the GOP candidate. That “some” you reference, may well be the difference in the election.

I don't even want to think about Romney winning the nomination right now. That said, coming from a military family Newt realizes he has a responsibility to the troops in the field. I have come to the same realization in the past couple of weeks. Obama has proven he is reckless enough to CAUSE our military personnel in Afghanistan to be killed.

I will not condemn those who refuse to vote for Romney; however, as for myself, if it comes to that I cannot be a party to leaving our troops in a war zone w/Obama as their Commander in Chief.

"...but principled conservatives will not be voting for Mitt Romney..."

Well here's a flash for you. These same Principled Conservative of which you speak are the same Principled Conservatives that did exactly the same thing in '08 and gave the rest of us, unprincipled though we are, the reign of 0 the first.

Are you familiar with Einstein's definition of insanity?

It could very well be.

Maybe our highest calling this election is to DENY the GOP-e the White House and to ensure we have a solid House and Senate.

The reelection of a socialist, is regrettably, the better of 2 evils. Surrendering to the socialist GOP-e is the primary evil- because they are the quislings in our camp.

If constitutional conservatives cannot get their house in order by eradicating the statists from our own house, we will never be able to return to foundational America.

I'm a Newt Gingrich guy ...

He's correct ... we will eventually unite ... and vote for ... the GOP nominee against Zero ...

However, please get this straight ... "any" GOP E-RINO Washington types who might read this Free Republic thread ...

... and I believe that I speak for many, many American, Tea Party, Patriot Conservatives ...

I may be "forced" to vote for that Mitt Romney slimeball ... that you "may" (stupidly) force upon us at Tampa in 2012 ...

However ...

I "absolutely" WILL NOT campaign for, put-up a yard sign for, walk my precient for, give donations to ...

Willard "Mittens" Romney ... under ANY circumstances.

Period.

I've done that sacrificial work before ... Bush-41, Bob Dole, Juan McCain ...

and then watched (in SHOCKED disbelief) as you Elite Smug Cocktailtail Party Washington Beltway types "dumped" (not pissed, but rather "dumped", with extreme prejudice) ALL over Conservative principles ...

Never again ...

"Assimilate that" ... Bush-41 and Karl Rove ...
