NBC is banking that many sports fans will pull away from pro football and baseball on a September weekend in 2013 to watch a sailing race.
With a host of technological innovations, the NBC Sports Group will broadcast the 34th America's Cup from San Francisco Bay beginning Sept. 7, 2013, it was announced Thursday.
The first two days of Team USA/Oracle Racing's Cup defense will be broadcast on NBC. It will be the first time since 1992 that the Cup Finals will be shown on broadcast TV. The rest of the races, which end Sept. 22, will be carried on NBC Sports Network, a cable outlet.
The NBC Sports Group also will broadcast the Louis Vuitton Cup, also on the bay, which will run July 4 to Sept. 1, 2013, and will determine the challenger for the America's Cup finals.

As long as they don’t have any rain delays ,, what could be more exciting to watch *-?
I left my heart yacht in San FRancisco Bay
The coverage of the Kiwi races was awesome with great camera shots on the boats and computer graphics of relative positions. Then it just dissolved away for the circus of events that followed in Spain and elsewhere. Let’s hope they get back on track because I thought they covered it very well.
I think they’re going to lose that bet. I’d rather watch grass grow.
I’ll be watching. The America’s Cup beats any football game hands down - at least in my opinion.
It sucked when the races were on the far side of the world- 1 or 2 in the morning my time.
Should make for a good visual.. The article says lots of HD cameras on the boats,, hi-tech all the way.
I watched the last competition on this site. Coverage was on board with great graphics. The new multihulls are blazingly fast. For t;hose who think this type of racing is boring, know this: you could water ski behind one and wonder what the hell you’re doing. They are that fast. sd http://bmworacleracing.com/en/news/livestream/index.html
Anything is better than basketball.
Nothing better than messing around on boats.
Look, call me crazy, but I really enjoy America’s Cup racing! I also really like tortoise drag racing!
My current Cat is a Classic P-Cat designed by Carter Pyle in 1960.
Here is a writeup from SI in 1965 on sailing a P-cat off Diamond Head.

Cats, yuck.
San Fran Bay is the ideal location.
Makes the races a spectator sport. Watch them from shore.
I’m sure NBC will use it to expose the elitism of Yachting so they can contrast the 1% verses the 99%.
Remember, this is just a couple of months before the election...
Cats? We’re stuck with them. I think there’s no boat more graceful than the old 12 meters. Nothing’s prettier than the original
America or the Blue Nose for that matter. Life goes on. sd
We got the 2012 Olympics in London too to boot, lots of tube and news’boob’ time to burn the eyeballs out with.. did I mention Bob Costas? .. speaking of potential disasters..
Here’s hoping a whale doesn’t wander into the Bay and get hit by one of them fellars,, or worse yet, a cruise ship. Carnival time!
This is almost laughable. Do the morons at MBC believe the America’s Cup race will boost their numbers?
