Nashville, Tenn. -- Newt Gingrich said there are "profound reasons" why Rick Santorum lost his re-election bid in 2006, painting a picture of a two-term senator who took positions that would make it "hard for him to carry that all the way to the general."
"He voted for the unions over FedEx," Gingrich told a luncheon of supporters. "I suspect most folks in this state don't know that. But in fact, he was a big labor Republican in Pennsylvania and I suspect when you get to Memphis and you say this is a guy who wanted to guarantee that FedEx gave into the unions, Santorum won't be as popular the following morning."
Recent polling indicates Gingrich is in fourth place here in Tennessee, which is one of the Southern states the candidate is relying on to restore momentum in his campaign. Gingrich said he believes he can do better in this state than the polls indicate, and predicted that after the results in Michigan and Arizona Tuesday, the contest for the Republican nomination will "redefine itself once again."
"We have now outlasted Pawlenty, Bachmann, Trump, Perry, Cain twice," Gingrich told the crowd - emphasizing the ability of his candidacy to outlast the others. He said Santorum is currently enjoying the "national news media momentum" because he "went to three states nobody else was in."
"Santorum was fourth place for three consecutive states. He did something very intelligent. He took all of his resources, he skipped South Carolina, Florida, and Nevada, he went to three states nobody else was in, won the three states, one of which was a disaster for Romney because he dropped from 60 to 35 in Colorado. So Santorum now has got all the national news media momentum." (more)

Newt bump!
The reason you have a credibility rating of zero is that you tell demonstrable falsehoods, and then double down and lie again. Can you name a single person outside your immediate family who you have ever convinced of anything?
You mean more liberal than the Gingrich supporters here at freerepublic like JR? Sure there is, like the Catholics and females who overwhelmingly voted to kick Santorum out of his Senate seat, in a massive, landslide rejection.
What did I lie about?
Print off the first two chapters of CAN MITT ROMNEY SERVE TWO MASTERS? from Amazon and I’ll bet your wife and all her friends will NOT vote for Romney.
NEW NEWT BUMP
Results for South Carolina Republican Primary (U.S. Presidential Primary) Jan 21, 2012 (100% of precincts reporting) Newt Gingrich 243,172 40.4% Mitt Romney 167,297 27.8% Rick Santorum 102,061 17% Ron Paul 78,000 13% Other 10,685 1.8%In what way would that NOT be a 3rd-place finish?
Unless, I’m misreading your original post, you indicate that Gingrich placed 3rd in SC.
I think you’d find Santorum is still not very popular with Catholics. He seems to be most popular with Evangelicals, although that’s perhaps too broad a definition. But he’s definitely not a winner among Catholics, even though he is a Catholic.
Santorum has his own problem with women.
In 2000, with an easy re-election to his second senate term, he still lost the women's vote in Pennsylvania. He was only saved by a huge margin with men of 57%. As it happens, W also won big with men (53%) no doubt helping Santorum down the ballot.
In 2006, with his infamous 18-point loss, Santorum lost 61% of women voters. Democrats know how to defeat him among women.
How did Santorum get elected to the Senate in 1994? Men and a higher than usual GOP turnout in Gingrich's Republican Revolution.
The above links are historical data and analysis, far removed from the 2012 campaign.
Santorum's election will depend on strong turn out of male voters and a GOP surge just as his two successful senate elections did.
Santorum would have to more than mirror with male voters Obama's appeal with women voters. Anything less and he's toast.
When he was "on his own" in 2006, he lost by a nearly historic margin.
Oddly enough we have a different presidential candidate who helped created just such a surge, one which swept Santorum into the Senate if only by a thin margin.
The media has pretty much left Santorum alone, even though with his stupid, blundering statements, he should be a target-rich environment. I think Obama would be happy with Santorum as the candidate, because he’d be even easier to wipe out than Romney. Just stand back and let him say a few more things like “$4.00 a gallon gas was responsible for the mortgage melt-down,” for example. Or ask him if he ever finished “doing his taxes”...
This one too!
Yeah, looking at his devastating ejection from his Senate seat, it was the usual break down, white Evangelicals for him at 71%, white Protestants 55%, all Protestants including blacks 49%, and white Catholics at 42%.
He got 39% of the female vote.
God bless you, dearest jaycee!
He has my vote in Mississippi!
I hope and pray you’re doing all right?
Doing better. Had the bone scan done today which takes up a lot of waiting time! Will wait for results. I have a compression fracture in my spine as the first x-ray showed. There is a procedure to fix that that I researched on the internet (after my doctor told me.) If the procedure goes as supposed to, it kills the pain immediately! We will look into that in future days or weeks.
I may vote tomorrow!!!
Ah, thanks. That was a copygraphical error. That was his 1st-place finish.
I know. subliminal Newt disorder— -:)
Santorum is Huckabee two.
