NASHVILLE Newt Gingrich went on the offensive against Rick Santorum during a campaign swing through Tennessee Monday, calling him a big Labor Republican and predicting his surging opponents fortunes will quickly change amid a chaotic race that could remain competitive all the way to the Republican National Convention in August.
Gingrich, who has said he must do well in the Southern states to win the GOP nomination, also predicted he would win the Alabama and Mississippi primaries next month.
Turning to the escalating violence in Afghanistan, the former Georgia congressman said the United States is facing an impossible task there.
We are not going to fix Afghanistan. It is not possible, he told a large group of Republicans at an afternoon luncheon here. These are people who have spent several thousand years hating foreigners. And what we have done by staying is become the new foreigners.
This is a real problem. And there are some problems where you have to say, You know, you are going to have to figure out how to live your own miserable life
because you clearly dont want to learn from me how to be unmiserable. And that is what you are going to see happen.

Take 30 minutes. Expand the video to fill the screen and listen to Newt [or read -- full transcript too]
But I love how his opponents keep telling him he must only be positive (and don't dare complain because Mitt and his PAC spent $2Million/day for 10 days attacking him) but as Rush Limbaugh made great pains (and repeated) the thing that annoys the Left is that Santorum isn't backing down. Neither does Newt. He's campaigning.
Newt YES YES YES, fight for America !!!!!!!!!!!!
HI!
I made another donation this morning too, and put it on my Facebook!
It gave me an option and picked out a photo and everything. Great fun!
God bless you and GO NEWT!
“If all conservatives were united behind Newt or Rick...I believe one or the other would win large enough to have the best chance of an outright nomination before the convention.”
Bingo!

Excellent. GO NEWT GO!
I’d never seen this little one minute clip of Newt. It’s fabulous! It would make a terrific campaign ad.

Rush did it again today-—spent a major part of his show doing all he can to make Senator Santorum more appealing to us skeptics.
Does Santorum have to include the value of all this free advertising on his donation reports?
Didn’t Rick physically pull out of Florida leaving it all to Newt?
: )
I do want Romney stopped in Michigan, and would lend every assist to Santorum to do so, expecting that such an upset would cause Romney serious implosion.
We take Socialists one head at a time, starting with Romney.
On the issues, against Santorum, Newt wins in a walk.
But, to your point, Newt needs to raise some Cain and expose a thing or two on Santorum, hardball, as Gingrich prepares to win the South, where pandering to unions traditionally has been a tough sell.
IMHO, conservative voters need to get out of the clouds on the Santorum tactic of diversion and redirecting away from his union pandering, by flogging his clerical approach to the religious right on contraception and family values in order to divert and delay the inevitable exposure of his record.
Smoke and mirrors. Newt knows it.
Clearly, this is just one reason, "why" Newt Gingrich has to be Commander-in-Chief.
I'm praying, and I donated again. I've volunteered to work in his campaign.
I painted signs for Newt all weekend and put them out in my neighboorhood.
I don't know what else to do.
Yep. If Romney and McCain are the only options, I still hold my nose and vote Romney just like I did in '08.
“Didnt Rick physically pull out of Florida leaving it all to Newt?”
The Santorum propaganda machine cannot absolve Rick of all his dirty campaigning sins.
Not much of an attack by the way, when you consider that Santorum uses the union stuff as a positive thing.
Now, now ROK...you can’t criticize a naps candidate. They and only they are pure as the driven snow. And naps should know them...he’s supported almost all of them at one time or another...
And he knew Rick Perry so well...even though he was always against him...he knew that Rick Perry was exactly the same as Barack Obama.
LOL
So you gotta bow to naps...

I’ve been talking about the diversionary nature of Santorum’s religious/social arguments for ages now, but I STILL get accused of being some kind of an atheist by Santorum guys, not just on FreeRepublic, but everywhere.
Hopefully they start to see the light and realize they’re being played by an opportunist who votes like a Pro-life Democrat.
Yes, because Rick was broke and couldn’t cut Florida either.
So, what was the point in throwing jabs at Newt who was under fire? Rick has tossed insults all along against Newt, when he wasn’t outright ignoring him, but seen borrowing Newt’s reasoning often enough.
I wanted to smack him. Newt never responded in kind, but for the fact of the matter that junior was just that..a partner on this or that occasion, once in great while.
Newt may have held back too long, if that makes you feel better.
Really frustrating that voters do not think very deeply about the functions of the Presidency.
Newt could solve any problem and prevent others by surrounding himself with a top-notch cabinet - inspired to accomplish only one goal: To Restore America!!!
Hiya Naps, my dear and sweet buddy!
I guess Newt was in Tennessee? Your candidate is leading and Newt needs to win the South. He ceded Michigan to him in the attempt to bring down the hated Romney, but he has to fight for Tennessee. I’m not happy with Rick Santorum’s ad either, saying stuff that’s totally untrue about Newt Gingrich, I think we have to grow tough skins like our candidates and not let that stuff interfere with our friendships, but it won’t with ours!!
You keep the faith and we’ll be together always and this primary will end eventually. NO ROMNEY.
Who knows, we might get Sarah at the convention!!!
(Dreaming here, I know).
Newt DID hold back too long, and Santorum has been doing this since the beginning of this whole process. People just didn’t notice this until recently.
“When you come South, take the case right here: he voted for the unions over FedEx,” [Newt] said. “Now I suspect most people in the state dont know that, but in fact he was a big labor Republican in Pennsylvania, and I suspect when we go to Memphis and say to people, gee, this is a guy who wanted to guarantee that FedEx would give in to the unions, Santorum won’t be as popular the following morning.”
