Poll: Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum Nearly Even In Georgia February 21, 2012

By Larry Peterson A new poll pegs Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum as nearly even in Georgia as its March 6 Republican primary approaches.

Gingrich’s double-digit lead has dried up in less than three weeks, and experts say his White House hopes likely are over if he can’t carry his home state.

In a Monday InsiderAdvantage Georgia poll of 711 likely primary voters, Gingrich, a former long-time Georgia congressman and House speaker, had 26 percent.

Former Massachusetts governor Romney had 24 percent and former Pennsylvania senator Santorum 23 percent. Texas Rep. Ron Paul trailed with 12 percent.

The margin of error for the poll was 3.6 percent, so Gingrich, Romney and Santorum were about even.

The results signalled a dip of 9 percentage points for Gingrich and a gain of 8 for Romney compared to a Feb. 9 Landmark-Rosetta Stone survey. Santorum slipped 3 points; Paul rose by 7.

Before the new survey, Georgia was the only state in which Gingrich led among 11 where voters will cast ballots on March 6.

“If these numbers are correct,” said Kennesaw State University political scientist Kerwin Swint, “they signal the collapse of Newt as a viable candidate. Georgians may be starting to dismiss him as a serious contender.”

University of Georgia political science professor Charles Bullock said the poll suggests “a substantial collapse” in Gingrich’s support.

“A whole lot of air is going out of his balloon,” Bullock said. “ ... It’s going to be hard to spin this in any possible way.”

After their terrible performances in the debate, I doubt Santorum or Romney will have much in the way of support in Georgia.

Newt Gingrich did very well in the debate and went after Obama. That is how it should be: stating what and how you will do things differently than the guy already mucking things up in the White House.

Noe: attacking Obama is important. Romney and Santorum spent far too much time bickering with one another. Not good, in fact, very stupid. Our goal is to unseat BHO2.

Politics is a team sport? This was Santorum’s explanation for supporting Arlen Spector and I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this but newt looked like he had just swallowed a canary.

Indeed this would spell disaster for Newt. He needs to win with at least 50% of the vote in his home state. Same is true of Mitt and Michigan or Santorum in Pennsylvania. Only the latter appears to be likely.

Yeah, what we need is someone who advocates “Big Governemnt solutions” and wants to spend trillions on Space Mirrors to fight global warming with Nancy Pelosi. Maybe someone who would co-endorse a candidate in a Congressional race with ACORN, Maybe someone who advocates Amnesty for illegals, and who bashed Reagan for not seeing the benefits in an all powerful central government improving all of our lives through wealth distribution.

Maybe Rush and Levin have it all wrong, but I would rather vote for someone who until very recently was bashed for being too conservative, then for someone who took payoffs from Fannie Mae and makes propoganda commercials with Nancy Pelosi. Newt has NO chance to win the nomination and couldn’t beat Ron Paul much less Obama.

Gingrich will make a good Education Secretary that will help disable and dismantle our corrupt public school system.

People forget that one of Gingrich's first votes in Congress helped establish the Dept. of Education in the first place. He might make a fine Secretary of Education but I doubt he'd oversee the dismantlement of the department.

Otoh, Rick Perry would take a sledge hammer to that sucker.

KDI1, my apologies. I didn’t know Senators voted on court nominees lower than Supremes. Now I do. Thank you, Reily and SatinDoll.

This poll is flawed in a significant way. Go to the cross-tabs, page 5:

Good info bump. The media knows how dangerous Gingrich is to Obama's chances for a second term.

Thank you for that list. It was startling. 24 Republicans voted yea, mostly the squishes you would expect to. Even Hagel, Lott and McCain voted no. To my shock Helms voted yea.

Just think, if all the Republicans had voted no, she never would have been in a position to destroy our country. Of course, Hussein would have found another destroyer...

And Newt, with the highest negatives of any candidate and trailing Ron “crazy” Paul could do better. You make the same argument that the Romneybots make “Vote for my RINO, because he can beat Obama in the Fall. That’s what they said about Ford, Dole and McCain.

I have seen a number of anti-Obama 20- and 30-somethings go berserk about Santorum. One even said he would not only vote for, he would *work* for the Obama campaign to beat Santorum. This guy is very anti-Obama in general.

While I think that is just nuts, from what I can tell, Santorum is a huge turn-off for many younger voters.

Gingrich will win GA and Romney will come in a distant third. How well Santorum does in MI will impact how well he does in GA. What doesn’t go to Rick goes to Newt.
