Poll: Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum Nearly Even In Georgia February 21, 2012
By Larry Peterson A new poll pegs Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum as nearly even in Georgia as its March 6 Republican primary approaches.
Gingrichs double-digit lead has dried up in less than three weeks, and experts say his White House hopes likely are over if he cant carry his home state.
In a Monday InsiderAdvantage Georgia poll of 711 likely primary voters, Gingrich, a former long-time Georgia congressman and House speaker, had 26 percent.
Former Massachusetts governor Romney had 24 percent and former Pennsylvania senator Santorum 23 percent. Texas Rep. Ron Paul trailed with 12 percent.
The margin of error for the poll was 3.6 percent, so Gingrich, Romney and Santorum were about even.
The results signalled a dip of 9 percentage points for Gingrich and a gain of 8 for Romney compared to a Feb. 9 Landmark-Rosetta Stone survey. Santorum slipped 3 points; Paul rose by 7.
Before the new survey, Georgia was the only state in which Gingrich led among 11 where voters will cast ballots on March 6.
If these numbers are correct, said Kennesaw State University political scientist Kerwin Swint, they signal the collapse of Newt as a viable candidate. Georgians may be starting to dismiss him as a serious contender.
University of Georgia political science professor Charles Bullock said the poll suggests a substantial collapse in Gingrichs support.
A whole lot of air is going out of his balloon, Bullock said. ... Its going to be hard to spin this in any possible way.

A prediction.
Gingrich is not acting like he’s worried he will lose Georgia. Newt is campaigning in other states.
I predicted by Super Tuesday, he will win Georgia by a comfortable margin.
He's going to be walking funny for a long time after they're done with him.
My wife (and many in her circle) are about as hard core conservative as you can get and they are not able to overlook Newt's serial adultery. Pennsylvania will be a two man race between Santorum and Romney . . . if Mitt hasn't packed it in by April 24th.
The near unanimous view of conservatives up here is that Rick Santorum has learned a lot from being out of office for six years and he is not only our best bet for putting Pennsylvania into play, but for beating Obama which is job #1.
No matter how you slice it, the vast majority of the Newt voters will not vote for Mitt under any circumstances and vice versa. We're going to need most of all three groups to put together 270+ electoral votes.
He certainly has my prayers.
Good. Just checking.
If the convention is brokered, the establishment is going to try and shove another ‘moderate’ like Christie or Daniels down our throats.
No thanks.
I guess Georgia voters didn’t get stung by NAFTA and the resultant job loss that some other states (including Arkansas) have felt...
You know - the same Gingrich that thought that jobs loss to Mexico was a positive for the US...

That’s exactly right, and I want to see Rick succeed in building such a winning coalition: the socons, the ficons, and the defcons. He could pull a fair number of Reagan Democrats as well.
This is bad news for Santorum. Romney’s strong performance in Georgia in this poll is a sign he is the front-runner.
Lol. People just don’t have a clue and it is a sad day for America to throw away an American national treasure like Newt Gingrich. If Brother Love would become the nominee there is going to be some serious buyer’s remorse. It is shameful how he is buying votes, using Christianity to sell himself. Frankly, he is not a whole lot better than Obama and the black vote.
You need to make your comment a little clearer.
And I would vote for GWB today, by the way.
If he doesn't win Georgia, then he's burnt toast. If he doesn't win something outside the Goldwater five in the southeast, then the best he can hope to do is ride into the convention as a delegate broker between Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum.
No matter where you go, Romney's support has been fairly consistent in the 22% to 40% range.
If he has to fight to win Georgia, he’s kidding himself about winning nomination.
of course we know that Santorum endorsed Romney too. I am starting to question whether he is even a social conservative based on his endorsements
I want Newt to be our nominee and next president about 10,000 times more than I want Santorum, but we should be more accurate in our statements than the lyin' ass 'Rats and Rinos IMO.
Aside: All GOP senators seem to lose their brains when it comes to voting for democrat-chosen supreme court wannabes. They allow utter nincompoops, selectees with utter empty judicial records to slide into the supreme court. Even the great legal liberal Lawrence Tribe thinks Sotomayor is a boob!
