Poll: Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum Nearly Even In Georgia February 21, 2012

By Larry Peterson A new poll pegs Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum as nearly even in Georgia as its March 6 Republican primary approaches.

Gingrich’s double-digit lead has dried up in less than three weeks, and experts say his White House hopes likely are over if he can’t carry his home state.

In a Monday InsiderAdvantage Georgia poll of 711 likely primary voters, Gingrich, a former long-time Georgia congressman and House speaker, had 26 percent.

Former Massachusetts governor Romney had 24 percent and former Pennsylvania senator Santorum 23 percent. Texas Rep. Ron Paul trailed with 12 percent.

The margin of error for the poll was 3.6 percent, so Gingrich, Romney and Santorum were about even.

The results signalled a dip of 9 percentage points for Gingrich and a gain of 8 for Romney compared to a Feb. 9 Landmark-Rosetta Stone survey. Santorum slipped 3 points; Paul rose by 7.

Before the new survey, Georgia was the only state in which Gingrich led among 11 where voters will cast ballots on March 6.

“If these numbers are correct,” said Kennesaw State University political scientist Kerwin Swint, “they signal the collapse of Newt as a viable candidate. Georgians may be starting to dismiss him as a serious contender.”

University of Georgia political science professor Charles Bullock said the poll suggests “a substantial collapse” in Gingrich’s support.

“A whole lot of air is going out of his balloon,” Bullock said. “ ... It’s going to be hard to spin this in any possible way.”

He didn’t cheat on any of his wives either.

Newt would be classified as a serial monogamist, not an unfaithful husband.

Blah, blah, blah... we have hear it all.

I support Newt and will continue to support him until he no longer needs or desires my support.

This country needs a real leader, not a Preacher.

President Newt Gingrich—”Our beloved republic deserves nothing less.”

If I’m Newt I wait and let Saint Rick keep running his mouth until people realize he has no chance to beat OBama in November. The Dems are probably salivating over the opportunity to run against Santorum. They do not even have to write the ads they write themselves.

you have seen the guy you are pushing havent you?...no chance? no ads?...meet newt

I think most people are honestly voting for negative reasons right now and not because they adore any of the candidates.

Nobody adores Romney.

So we’re voting against him.

I think Santorum supporters are voting against Romney and Newt and Newt supporters are voting against Romney and Santorum.

I still support Newt and will at least through super Tuesday.

I hate the current primary system. It’s a wonder we EVER get a decent candidate.

What do you want in a primary season. The states complained that they had no say as to who the nominee would be. It was always decided by 2 or 3 primaries. This year the Republican voters didn’t put up with the lame stream media. Usually by the time Ohio voted, it was over.
The pundits don’t even care when they are wrong! They are worse than the local weathermen’s forcasts.

Santorum is already fading in MI due to Mitt’s negative ads. Lets see how his numbers look after three more weeks of Drudge and Mitt double teaming him night and day. March 6th is still a ways off.

This poll is flawed in a significant way. Go to the cross-tabs, page 5:

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/docs/2012/InsiderAdvantage_GA_0220.pdf

27% of those polled were Independent, and of those, 55% were between 18-29. That means a full 15% of those polled were Independents between 18-29, a significant overestimation of that population’s percentage of the actual electorate on primary day in Georgia.

In the poll, not a single one of this sub-sample voted for Gingrich. This skewed the results; without that distortion, Gingrich would have a lead outside the margin of error.

I absolutely agree with you. I think it is great that there are four candidates in the race, and thus more of the states are going to have a say in the nomination — just as the democrats did four years ago. They had three strong candidates slugging it out almost up to the convention, and that hard fought primary contest did not hurt their eventual candidate. I am glad that we have three candidates who are following suit this time, and not just conceding to Romney. In fact, I wish that our other candidates had not dropped out so early.

No one really care’s who’s an insider or outsider. Gingrich has accomplished big things. Santorum’s a whiner, and while he’s made minor contributions here and there as part of efforts led by others such as Newt, he hasn’t actually led much or done much.

And that’s not Satan’s fault.

That’s Santorum’s fault.

You do realize that most of the people that voted for newt in his old district are working on their dirt naps now, he never won a state wide election and the people in his old district do not know it was his old district. The population there has doubled since noot was in office.

Skaterboy is basically illiterate.

He doesn’t know how to write a sentence. But he thinks he can make his illiteracy look impressive somehow, as if his lack of intelligence and punctuation reveals something profound. This is how the tools write on Democratic Underground and Daily Kos.

How did Santorum do in his last statewide election? Humiliated by 18 points. 2006 was a bad year for Republicans, but no other incumbent got slaughtered like that; Santorum’s loss was an order of magnitude more.

An 18 point loss in a “purple” state where all those Reagan Democrats live, Democrats we need to win a Presidential election.

So if Pennsylvanians got tired of his whinny, preachy demeanor, I don’t think he would wear well on the country generally.

Newt is done like dinner. He needs to drop out, endorse Santorum and get himself a good position in the coming Santorum presidency.

Oh perfect. Let's turn the election over to the guy who just admitted he's no visionary or manager.

Yeah, that's just what Newt should do alright!

And if newt had run for reelection ,after getting kicked out of his speaker-ship, he would have lost by 90% to some sixth grader.
