Rick Santorum's claim that the Netherlands advocates mass murder through involuntary euthanasia has prompted a furious backlash from the Western European country, with local news sources calling the Republican a "crazy extreme" candidate making up facts to stir up his political base.
"Rick Santorum Thinks He Knows the Netherlands: Murder of the Elderly on a Grand Scale" fumed the headline of the newspaper NRC Handelsblad on Saturday.
The article references an interview, barely played up by the American press, in which Santorum claims that euthanasia makes up "10 percent of all deaths" in the Netherlands," and that many of those people were essentially murdered by the state.

I realize that the Dutch maybe great people, but my mom’s family came here from Holland in 1625 and they are the worst cooks ever.
They don’t like the French (but who does).
My dad’s family is from Italy, and for them that’s all that matters.
freaky-deaky - hahahahah!
Yeah — for an American presidential candidate to be in Dutch with the Dutch means just what?
True or not, Santorum needs to stick to economics.
That Marxist in the White House has made Obamacare the law of the land. I am sure euthanasia may well be in between this over 4000 pages of pure social and fiscal engineering.
Santorum is awakening people from their sleep about social issues. It is high time.
To Marxists, social and fiscal issues are one and the same.
Now, someone is saying it on our side. Whether Santorum gets the nomination or not, he is bold and unafraid to talk about those issues.
“...he loathes abortion and euthanasia”? Is this from the pro “kill babies and old folks” lobby?!?!?
None of what he is talking about matters at all except it will all keep him from being elected in 2012.

I got to disagree with this. Issues like euthanasia are important as they tie in with obamacare. The excitability of liberals when Palin called them out on death panels really hit a nerve.
Social issues are points of positivity for the Republicans, Santorum is on the popular side of this issue.
Its just a myth that social issues hurt the GOP, IMO.
Economic issues are easy for liberal demogogue, but not this.
Aren’’t there a lot of Dutch related people in Pennsylvania, where Santorum already lost reelection?
Why are the flaming libs at Newsweek so stupid?
I was thinking the same thing, Why the Netherlands?
Why not talk about Oregon? Or Terry Schiavo?
I tried some of those wooden shoes a couple of times. I do not understand the fascination, but, in a pinch, they’d work if you had nothing else.
Conservatives are outraged by lies - leftists are outraged by the truth.
Santorum? He's responding to questions.
Its the media thats hyperventilating.
The media can go to *ell. Let our candidates tell it like it is.
Amen, bro. It is indeed that the remark found a honest target that brings on the yowls. Hopefully some Dutch agree with it.
“Pennsylvania Dutch” are descendants of Germans. The usage of “Dutch” in that case is simply a corruption of “Deutsch.”
Let me let you talk to my brother’s wife, a 30 year old lib dem who voted for Obama but now realizes her mistake.
I guaran-damn-tee you neither her nor my brother, a republican, will vote for him at this point, because they both view him as a “right wing maniac”, but ESPECIALLY HER, and I promise you, she is representative of a whole hell of a lot of female voters in this country.
He may well be right on, but if he can’t get women to vote for him, say hello to involuntary euthanasia.
Maybe he should run in the Netherlands since he was talking about them?
