Rick Santorum's claim that the Netherlands advocates mass murder through involuntary euthanasia has prompted a furious backlash from the Western European country, with local news sources calling the Republican a "crazy extreme" candidate making up facts to stir up his political base.
"Rick Santorum Thinks He Knows the Netherlands: Murder of the Elderly on a Grand Scale" fumed the headline of the newspaper NRC Handelsblad on Saturday.
The article references an interview, barely played up by the American press, in which Santorum claims that euthanasia makes up "10 percent of all deaths" in the Netherlands," and that many of those people were essentially murdered by the state.

Amply documented here on FR.
I bet that most euthanasia is indeed involuntary
And we care what the Dutch think about a USA presidential candidate - why?
Well, I can’t say that I’ve kept up with the latest statistics, but the Dutch certainly were pioneers of the euthanasia movement. And I’ve read of several cases of involuntary euthanasia, where neither the patient nor the family agreed.
There was one case fairly early in which a doctor killed his patient so he wouldn’t have to wait around and miss the start of his vacation.
The Netherlands has long been a lesson for those who think that euthanasia can be totally “voluntary.”
I’d say that the Dutch are yapping because Rick hit them where it hurt.
I think Newt Gingrich also loathes abortion and euthanasia. And I'm pretty sure Ron Paul does as well.
Heck, Romney would even say he opposed abortion and Euthanasia. so it's funny that these foreigners have no clue how decadent their country has become.
Geesh, how the truth hurts.
To the people in the Netherlands:
Methinks thou doth protest too much.
fvck ‘em.
Why the hell is he spending time on some of these bullshit issues?
Geez how about attacking what is going on HERE with a marxist in the WH.
I guess that means Newt picks up the delegates from the Netherlands.
Here’s the problem. If Santorum runs as Saint Rick, and he’s already being tagged that way,he will turn off all those who are sinners. There’s a lot more of those people than saints. Then you get nothing.
A bit of balance is perhaps called for.
Dey gots dykes in Holland dont dey?
No wonder they hate Santorum.
I really don’t give a smelly Obama about whether or not they object to our labeling of their practices. ‘Twould be better for them to worry about Islam.
The truth isn’t always pleasant.
I saw a documentary a number of years ago about the Nazi euthanasia program and how it was promoted through propaganda films like "Life Without Life". The arguments for this mercy killing were always that it was what these people would want rather than to have a "life without life" and of course the money to be saved by not caring for this burdensome population. Obama adviser, Dr. Ezekiel Emmanuel and former Senator Tom Daschle make these same arguments in their health care plans.
I don’t know, but I am tempted to start calling him Rick Sanitarium myself.
None of what he is talking about matters at all except it will all keep him from being elected in 2012.
I am just going to say that if he doesn’t win FL, he cannot be elected president, and I do not see the south of Florida getting behind someone talking about irrelevent stuff like this.
There are only two things I hate: those who are intolerant of other people’s cultures... and the freaky-deaky Dutch.
Perhaps Rick/Huck or Rick/Rubio wins PA, OH, and FL ..a landslide win over the beloved Obama!!!!
