Mitt Romney has raised the issue of the social safety net. Washington could learn from the lesson of his church.
Ever since Mitt Romney said he was "not concerned about the very poor" but would fix America's social safety net "if it needs repair," conservatives and liberals have been frantically making suggestions. Gov. Romney says he would consider options like restructuring Medicaid. But if he wants to see a welfare system that lets almost no one fall through the cracks while at the same time ensuring that its beneficiaries don't become lifelong dependents, he could look to his own church.
As I ride in a golf cart through a new 15-acre warehouse on the outskirts of Utah's capital, I can't help but wonder: How many Wal-Marts would fit in here? How many burgers can you make from 4,400 industrial pallets of frozen meat? And how do they keep this place cleaner than my kitchen floor?
Dedicated last month, the Bishops Central Storehouse contains a two-year supply of food to support the Mormon church's welfare system in the U.S. and Canada (primarily for church members in need) and its humanitarian program, which sends food, medical supplies and other necessities to the needy (of all faiths) world-wide.
In addition to goods from canned peaches to emergency generators, the facility also houses the church's own trucking company, complete with 43 tractors and 98 trailers, as well as a one-year supply of fuel, parts and tires for the vehicles. Just in case.
The storehouse is not only a kind of physical marvelit has been built to withstand an earthquake with a magnitude as high as 7.5but also a symbol of strength and self-sufficiency.

I agree, and no one should try to assist the destruction of Christian souls and the growth and positive image of a horrible cult.
It is a mandatory tithing, more of a tax.
When the cult leaders can demand your tax returns to verify that you are coughing up a verified amount, and when you cannot get past the Temple door unless you comply with the mandatory 10% fee, then calling it a tax is not a stretch.
You know there is vastly more to religion and dark cults and satanism and perverted theologies, and humanity traps, than merely, ‘Muslim/not Muslim’.
Pillars of Mormonism, pillars of Islam...all vain attempts by man to reach up to God.
The Good News of Jesus Christ is that God reached down to us.
“As Bishop, Mitt Romney had the authority to request a Mormons federal tax returns, if he was suspicious that they were holding out on the organization.”
I am 71. I was raised a Mormon although I am not now a practicing one. Based on what I was taught, this is a total fabrication. Tithe paying in the Mormon Church is on the honor system. You don’t know what you are talking about!
Not if you are a muslim!
And NO, I'm not going to get into a pissing contest with you!
Were you a Temple Mormon, a Bishop? We have those here at freerepublic.
They have stated that the Bishop does indeed have the authority to require tax returns, to grant you a Temple recommend.
To do that, then you would have to continue to defend Mormonism, I don’t want to see that either.
Lots could be said but I will just say this - barf!
huh?
Yours?
No I would say tax. When you have to “tithe” so that can be saved, it’s an anti-hell tax.
You can get one person to say almost anything you want, that doesn’t make it true. But, we’ve had this conversation before ...
Not one person, a mass of them here at freerepublic, Temple Mormons, at least one Bishop, expert Ex-Mormons, people who have a command of the teachings of their sometimes many generations old membership in their past religion.
You LIED, I went through your entire posting history, which predates mine, which only started in 2005.
This is the first time that you have ever posted to me.
Are you Mormon? Meat before Milk, Taqiyya, and all that?
Anti-hell tax?
Jesus died for all of our sins his death on the cross paid the price you don’t have to pay your way to heaven. His grace alone saves everyone who comes to him sinful and sorrowful.
Agreed.
mormonism teaches that the lds jesus did not pay the price on the Cross but in the garden.
mormonism also teaches that part of their working for salvation is paying tithes.
My uncle a former bishop, still practicing mormon, other mormon family and friends have all said that yes they do have the authority.
I have one friend in particular where the bishop bills them monthly for the “tithe”.
Tax is a good name for it.
If you are required to pay “tithe” for salvation and required to show proof of income, using the word tax doesn’t seem such a big deal.
In fact it could be classified as an anti-hell tax.
