Romney, Santorum to Skip March 1 Debate
National Journal ^ | 2/16/12 | Sarah B. Boxer

Posted on 02/16/2012 12:45:46 PM PST by KansasGirl

The front of the GOP pack will be absent at the March 1 debate in Atlanta sponsored by CNN and the Georgia Republican Party, CBS News/National Journal has learned. The Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum campaigns said they have decided to skip the debate, throwing into question whether it will happen as planned. "With eight other states voting on March 6, we will be campaigning in other parts of the country and unable to schedule the CNN Georgia debate," Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul said. "We have participated in 20 debates, including eight from CNN." The 20 debates include one scheduled for Feb. 22 in Mesa, Ariz.

I agree with your take on this.

If we don’t have Newt Gingrich as our next president, we will not see another chance for true prosperity and true greatness for a long long time, maybe never again.

I understand why Santorum pulled out, too. As soon as I heard Romney had packed it in, I knew Santorum would not face Newt alone. The excuse that they have to stay on the campaign trail is ridiculous. Yeah, they have to make a stump speech instead of going before a national audience!?

If we have heard all we need to hear, why is it that No One can tell us what Rick Santorum intends to do if he is elected? Not that it’s likely that he will be elected, but still, is that not the minimum requirement when someone is applying for the highest position in the country? What are your Solutions, Mr. Santorum??? The last time I looked, the #1 Issue on his website was Pornography! Who Is this man, Church Lady?

Right now Santorum’s surge has all the depth of a grade school crush, so maybe this cowardly move will give people pause.

We MUST have more debates... and they ALL must be there... how else are we to learn how the sides stand on the important issues of the day!?

[Newt, Sarah, Col Allen West, NM Gov etc should all start a third party and leave these elitist north east types to their Whig party]

If Santorum or Romney wins, I would expect to see a third party movement actually come forward. Or if Newt can hang in there and create a Brokered Convention, we can put a stop to this insanity. And for once, I am all for a third party. What else would we have to lose if it comes down to that?

It looks like there is still one on 2/22 in Mesa. So if Newt can resurrect his campaign with a magic debate, he’ll have his chance.

Mesa? When I lived in AZ it was the Mormon center of the state with a big Mormon temple and expansive gardens surrounding it. More recently, it has become a retirement haven but no doubt the area still has a high percentage of Mormon professionals who will vote for Romney.

(BTW - my sister did early voting and voted for RuPaul instead of Newt by mistake. Had to go down to the voting center and get her ballot changed.)

Trump was going to be the moderator. Gingrich never withdrew, the other candidates did, so the debate was cancelled.

Why of course the Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum campaigns reached the decision not to debate independently.

At least the Feb 22 debate is still on.

MittSnake and little RickySnake probably want to cancel that one, too.

Newt’ll clean their cuckoo clocks right off the wall.

He’s the only one with VISION.

GO NEWT!!!

The GOP is quickly making itself uglier than I imagined.

That nonsense in Texas yesterday may have been the straw that broke the camel’s back: delaying Texas’s Primary AGAIN!!!!

Since when should TEXAS not have their vote on time?

In Florida, Newt was tired of the attack ads, etc, but this time, he will be ready for a fight. And little Ricky will have to actually face the “Old Master” on his own battlefield.

No wonder little ricky is shaking in his boots.

You couldn’t be more right.

They are BOTH COWARDS. The American public should be offended that Santorum and Romney would choose to hide under a rock.

Either of them would hide in the White House when things got tough... and it will be tough from day one.

The only real man and leader in this race is Newt Gingrich.

Sadly, it looks more and more that we are going to get stuck with Obama for another 4 years....... all brought to you by the GOP-e and those that support them.

Thank you very much!

GO NEWT!

The media are shutting him out, as well.

You make an excellent point. I never thought that a Third Party might have a chance, but with leadership like Palin, Newt, West, Cain and Perry, I can see the possibilities.

The magnitude and cross media/GOP-e unity of ‘Bloody Thursday’ directed against Newt, had a huge impact on the Florida debate.

“I understand why Santorum pulled out, too. As soon as I heard Romney had packed it in, I knew Santorum would not face Newt alone.”

I have a haunch that there is a pact Mitt/Rick , hidden under the wraps. Mitt didn’t campaign in Missouri and Minnesota, and very timidly in Colorado. He didn’t care much for caucuses, which don’t allocate binding delegates, so Santorum with ONLY three pledged delegates took the lead? Mitt’s strategy appeared to backfire, so probably they have already changed the order in P/VP ...

Both have interest to “destroy Gingrich” as a Romney’s staffer boasted in Florida.

The pretext to decline the debate is indeed ridiculous, they were ALL present at the debate, only two days before the S.Carolina vote.

I’d vote for Santorum but if he ducks this debate I’d have serious concerns about doing so. What is he afraid of...can he not handle the center stage. We need to evaluate him on center stage as we have newt and romney.

Romney is too cowardly to compete in a debate if he isn’t allowed to stack the crowd.

So apparently is Santorum.

Nothing is going to come between Little Ricky and Willard's VP slot. Nothing--especially no stinkin' debate.
