Insisting that it is dangerous and wrong for women not to have access to contraceptives free of charge, the White House press secretary asserted that the US bishops never supported health reform to begin with--prompting a rebuttal from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.
During the February 13 White House press briefing, Press Secretary Jay Carney was asked a lengthy question:
On Friday, you seemed pretty satisfied that the contraception issue had been settled and you wanted to move on. But the bishops put out a statement saying that it still raises serious moral concerns, and said the President's plan "continues to involve needless government intrusion in the internal governance of religious institutions." As you know, there's also legislation in the Senate. One would allow any employer to raise a conscience objection to the contraceptive issue. Another one is broader -- even raise conscience objections to any aspect of the rule at all. Is this issue settled? Are you going to be able to move forward? The bishops have control of the pulpit, so to speak, and they have been talking against it. Carney replied that
the organizations that will be most affected by this -- Catholic Charities and the Catholic Health Association -- have expressed their support for this policy, and we obviously appreciate that.

ugh.
Where are the Southern Baptists??
The White House is lying (meaning Obama has ordered them to lie), and this is their primary strategy. The Catholic Church has 117,000 health care facilities, including hospitals, clinics, orphanages, as well as 18,000 pharmacies and 512 centers for the care of those with leprosy. One fourth of the world's medical care is provided by the Catholic Church. A petty bureaucrat with no qualifications or accomplishments should not be implying that he is more interested in delivering medical care than the world's largest provider.
Let’s see if the Catholics turn on the Democrats over this. My guess is “no”.
“Where are the Southern Baptists??”
If more Catholics voted like Southern Baptists this bum would have never reached the White House.
60% of Catholics disagree with Obama on his "Compromise".
Pathetic that the first thing the Bishop mentioned in the article does, is run out and essentially say, “but we’ve always supported socialized medicine”. Why did the Catholic Church, a Church which started schools and hospital, one day decide that they should quit taking care of those in need, and farm it out to the government? Why did they do this?
Once again, this is not merely a “Catholic” issue: Signers of the Manhattan declaration included the Orthodox, the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, the North American Lutheran Church, and the Anglican Church in North America among others.
They will be building igloo’s in hell if I ever give another dime to Catholic Charities.
You may be right. The point at which they should have switched is long past. It’s just a shame that Catholics seem to identify more with dems than the dems do with Catholics.
Be careful here. Catholic Charities has unequivocally denied having accepted the president’s accommodation. There’s a FR thread today on the subject. The WH apparently forgot that CC takes orders from the bishops and jumped the gun announcing the charity’s support.
As always, when you have any large organization, you will have those who reject some of all of its beliefs. Such is the case with the Catholic Church.
So, if some voice out of Catholic Charities chimes in with a response, that does not necessarily mean they speak for the larger organization.
The Pope speaks for the Catholic Church, then the bishops, and in all the history and teachings of the Church are contant and not revocable by some church bureaucrat in some corner of the world. If the Pope does not support something, and if the teachings of the Church do not support something, then it is not supported.
They did not fire Hans Kung because he was in charge.
LOLOLOLOL!!! Good luck with that, O.
No one hates Catholics more than the feminist base of the Democrat Party.
Dr. Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Conventions Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC), told LifeSiteNews.com we will not comply with the Dept. of Health and Human Services mandate requiring religious institutions to cover abortifacient products such as Plan B, Ella, and the IUD.
We want the law changed, or else were going to write our letters from the Nashville jail, just like Dr. King wrote his from the Birmingham jail, Dr. Land said.....
